A Singaporean has secured a fresh mandate to lead one of the United Nations’ key agencies on innovation and intellectual property, following a vote by member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Department of Foreign Affairs said in a news release dated April 24.
At the 67th Extraordinary Assembly of WIPO Member States in Geneva, delegations reappointed Director General Daren Tang, extending his leadership after a six-year term marked by growth in global intellectual property filings, modernization of IP services, and expanded grassroots programs supporting innovation and creativity.
Tang, a national of Singapore, first assumed office on October 1, 2020. His reappointment signals continued confidence from member states as WIPO navigates emerging challenges such as artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and innovation financing.
Member states reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening a balanced global intellectual property system — one that supports economic growth while advancing development — and to enhancing international cooperation and rule-making mechanisms.
The session was chaired by Carlos D. Sorreta, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva.
Ambassador Sorreta commended the cooperation of members and the work of WIPO leading up to the 68th General Assembly to be held in July this year, and urged stronger collaborations to deliver on commitments made in the various committees and working bodies.
Before joining WIPO, Tang served as Chief Executive of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), where he led efforts to transform it into a hub for innovation and international collaboration. Earlier in his career, he worked as an international lawyer for the Singapore government, focusing on economic law and global negotiations.
A graduate of the National University of Singapore and Georgetown University Law Center, Tang also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. Outside his professional work, he is known as a jazz pianist and author.
