Australia and the Philippines are expanding their maritime security cooperation, with Philippine Coast Guard officers completing specialized vessel search training conducted by the Australian Border Force in Sydney.
The training marks the first time that the Australian Border Force has delivered vessel search capability training for members of the Philippine Coast Guard, strengthening the agency’s ability to carry out safe, lawful, and effective maritime interdiction operations.
As strategic partners, Australia and the Philippines continue to deepen collaboration in addressing transnational crime and emerging civil maritime challenges across the region.
“Australia is working closely with the Philippines to help keep our region peaceful, stable and prosperous,” said Marc Innes-Brown.
The training course, held from March 2 to 6 in Sydney, highlighted the growing strength of Australia–Philippines maritime cooperation and their shared commitment to disrupting the movement of illicit goods across international waters.
Officials noted that transnational crime poses a significant threat to regional stability and economic development, directly impacting communities in both countries. Maintaining safe and secure sea lanes is also vital for protecting trade routes, supply chains, and national security.
The program was delivered under the Southeast Asia Maritime Partnerships initiative of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which aims to strengthen regional cooperation in addressing shared maritime security challenges.
