The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has donated US$200,000 (approximately ₱11 million in humanitarian aid to assist victims of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Northern Cebu on September 30, 2025, causing significant casualties and damage.
In a turnover ceremony held on October 14, 2025, Representative Wallace Minn-Gan Chow of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the Philippines presented the donation on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan to the Cebu Provincial Government, through the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO). The donation was received by Deputy Resident Representative Cherbett Karen L. Maralit of MECO and a representative from the Cebu Provincial Government.
Representative Chow extended Taiwan’s deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and to all affected by the disaster. He expressed hope for the swift recovery and rebuilding of the affected communities, reaffirming Taiwan’s commitment to stand with the Filipino people in times of need.
Deputy Resident Representative Maralit and Cebu officials expressed their profound gratitude to the Republic of China (Taiwan) for its compassion and solidarity, noting that the gesture reflects the strong bond of friendship and mutual support between Taiwan and the Philippines.
The powerful earthquake claimed over 70 lives and left hundreds injured, with widespread damage to homes and infrastructure. As a close neighbor and longstanding partner, Taiwan reiterated its readiness to provide additional support for recovery and relief efforts in Cebu.
In light of increasing natural disasters in the region, Representative Chow emphasized Taiwan’s willingness to enhance cooperation with the Philippines on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR) initiatives. He noted that joint efforts in resilience-building and emergency response are vital to ensuring the safety and well-being of both nations’ communities.
