Embellished with its admired unique culture and values, Finland reveals itself as one of the precious gems of the Nordic region. Finnish people, for instance, have been dubbed as the happiest people in the world for a few years now, and I can attest to the veracity of this result from the World Happiness Report for I have personally experienced their warmth, sharing, and caring values during the 106th Independence Day celebration of Finland.

Fret not as you can discover more about Finland beyond its well-known attractions like the mesmerizing Northern Lights or aurora borealis, friendly locals, picturesque landscapes, and the enchanting home of the iconic Christmas star, Santa Claus. And let me tell you dear friends, one of those delightful finds to uncover is Lohikeitto, a Finnish traditional Salmon soup that you must savor!

Unveiling Genuine Happiness: The Finnish Way

With a reception hosted in December 6, at the Ascott Bonifacio Global City, Finnish Ambassador to the Philippines, H.E. Juha Pyykkö, shared that the Finnish people are humbled for being the top rank as the happiest people, and thus cracked the code by highlighting their own meaning and infrastructure of happiness.

“Happiness is not necessarily long, laughing out loud or having fun. For us, happiness is more like being contented with one’s life,” explained by Ambassador Pyykkö.

The Finnish Ambassador however cited the factors behind such as a well-functioning society, free high quality education and healthcare, long life expectancy, limited corruption, equality, social security, and trust amongst the population as well as societal institutions.

This is why the envoy emphasized that the pivotal role of autonomy and sovereignty of a nation should not be taken for granted, but rather cultivated everyday — as encapsulated by common values and principles by Finland and the Philippines in safeguarding the rule of law.

Ambassador Pyykkö also shared the good news that the Philippine Embassy in Helsinki will reopen next year! Indeed, the people-to-people relationship and the growing exchange of arts, culture, and gastronomy will continue to flourish in the coming years.

In Step, In Sync: Finland-Phl Relations

In addition, it takes two to tango to maintain a strong relationship with each other. As Tango has been a popular dance in the country for over centennial years — each sway in tango signifies a unique blend of passion, melancholy, and deep connection. And perhaps, the Finnish Ambassador also wanted to let the Filipinos appreciate Tango to sway our blues away and be happy like the Finnish.

To showcase these poignant emotions, the subtle movements serve as a medium, weaving a narrative which mirrors symbolic lyrics—capturing metaphorical take of changing seasons, the ache of unrequited love, the profound depths of sorrow, or the enduring human spirit of resilience.

This timeless bond of maintaining cordial relations between Finland and the Philippines extends beyond connections. Vivid on every partaken step, encompassing as a tool of genuine moments towards emotional and tangible support for overall well-being.

The envoy also brandished the presence of Finnish sauna manufacturing in Cebu, and encourages everyone to incorporate in one’s life as part of physical and spiritual purification and a much needed rejuvenating experience amidst the hustle and bustle of life.
