Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the Indonesian government will positively respond to the “17+8 People’s Demands” raised during recent demonstrations across Jakarta and other regions.

“As these demands come from the people, the government, mandated by the people, must respond accordingly. It cannot ignore their aspirations,” Yusril stated on Thursday in Jakarta.

He stressed that under President Prabowo Subianto’s directive, law enforcement will be applied firmly yet fairly, ensuring transparency and full respect for human rights.

“Peaceful demonstrators will not be disturbed, as public protests are a fundamental right. But those who engage in arson, vandalism, looting, or incitement will face strict legal consequences,” he said.

Yusril also emphasized due process, noting that all suspects must be treated as innocent until proven guilty, with guaranteed access to legal counsel. He added that law enforcement officers themselves will be held accountable if they violate these principles.

To safeguard rights, Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai has formed a monitoring team to oversee police conduct, while the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) has been granted full access to monitor protests, gather evidence, and receive complaints.

Yusril acknowledged that the protests had attracted global attention, including from the UN Human Rights Office in Geneva. Still, he reaffirmed Indonesia’s democratic commitment:

“Peaceful demonstrators, including students, are protected. Only those who break the law will face action,” he said
