The Embassy of Malaysia in Manila revved up the engines of regional sustainability last April 30, 2025, with the ceremonial Flag-Off of the ASEAN Unity Drive 2025 (AUD2025), a bold and timely electric vehicle (EV) expedition spanning nine ASEAN countries.

A highlight of Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN this year, the AUD2025 is not just a road trip—it’s a rolling symbol of inclusivity, sustainability, and the region’s shared commitment to a cleaner, more connected future. The convoy, featuring sleek EVs and a shared sense of purpose, departed from the Philippine leg en route to Singapore, on a journey that will culminate at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025.

Held at the Embassy grounds in Makati City, the Flag-Off ceremony gathered key diplomatic representatives, marking a united front in ASEAN’s green transport revolution.

“The ASEAN Unity Drive 2025 is a timely initiative to enhance ASEAN’s global image and influence,” said Malaysian Ambassador Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino.

“By showcasing our collective commitment to sustainability and innovation, we are positioning ASEAN as a forward-looking and responsible region—one that is attractive to international investors and partners who prioritize environmental stewardship and green growth.”

Indeed, the AUD2025 is more than just about electric cars. It’s about driving policy, innovation, and investment across borders. Organized by the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii), an agency under the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), and backed by leading Malaysian carmaker Proton, the initiative pushes for regional cooperation in accelerating EV adoption, promoting green technology, and combating climate change—without leaving economic opportunity behind.

Ambassador Castelino added that AUD2025 “underscores Malaysia’s commitment to spearheading policies that promote green transportation, enhance infrastructure development, and encourage innovation in the automotive sector.” With the tagline “Uniting Automotive Across Borders,” the convoy is a metaphor in motion: countries collaborating for progress, industries aligning for sustainable growth.

Diplomatic presence at the event was as strong as the convoy’s engines. In attendance were H.E. Agus Widjojo (Indonesia), H.E. Megawati Manan (Brunei Darussalam), H.E. Constance See (Singapore), H.E. Sin Saream (Cambodia), Mr. Rangsant Srimangkorn (Thailand), Mrs. Darli Nwe (Myanmar), and Mr. Mouablong Xayvue (Lao PDR)—a fitting show of ASEAN solidarity.

The Embassy of Malaysia extended its gratitude to the Philippine government and local authorities who ensured the seamless passage of the convoy through the country. As the drive heads south toward Singapore and beyond, it carries with it not just passengers and power cells—but a vision.

From city streets to international highways, the ASEAN Unity Drive 2025 proves that when nations move together, they move farther—and greener.
