Why are media freedom and truth-telling vital, particularly to diplomacy? Dutch Ambassador to the Philippines Marielle Geraedts explains.
“As part of the international community, diplomacy is our best and most important tool of trade, but we wield it most effectively when we make informed decisions—informed decisions based on independent, reliable, verified, and balanced facts and information,” the Ambassador said at the Embassy Night celebration hosted by The Philippine Business and News (THEPHILBIZNEWS) and Hotel Okura Manila
“A free media is crucial for this, and so is the free flow of discourse and accurate information,” she said in her speech before a crowd of diplomats, business leaders, and media practitioners.
Ambassador Geraedts listed down the various roles of free media in society.
“Free media…is the link that bridges the gaps, exposes what is happening on the ground, amplifies messages and positions of the government and other stakeholders and partners in the international community, and shapes narratives while countering false ones that can sway public opinion and support,” she said.
Ambassador Geraedts proposed a solution. “In a world where virtually unlimited information is at our fingertips, we have to be vigilant against spread of disinformation that not only clouds judgment and can escalate tensions, but one that could be used as tools for destructive propaganda,” she said.
She highlighted The Netherlands’ advocacy for freedom of the press. “[We are] a firm supporter of freedom of expression, online and offline, at home and around the world. Freedom of the press is fundamental to a free, inclusive, and informed society and must be protected across the globe.”
The Ambassador also expressed her appreciation for THEPHILBIZNEWS and its founder, Monsi Alfonso Serrano. She acknowledged the publication’s contribution to delivering credible news and information about business, culture, foreign affairs, investments, among others.
“You and your team…have played an important part in upholding media freedom and truth-telling in the Philippines,” she said, noting that THEPHILBIZNEWS “embodies” a free media.
“Congratulations on your 16 years and I hope that you continue to flourish and remain steadfast in your commitment to bring the business and diplomatic communities closer not just to each other, but to the Filipino worldwide,” she added.
