Introducing an interactive information hub for knowledge-based conversations to power the energy transition movement in Southeast Asia

The Clean, Affordable, and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE) Programme recently launched the Southeast Asia Information Platform for the Energy Transition (SIPET), unique, interactive knowledge and coordination platform targeted at professionals working on the energy transition in the region. SIPET is designed to facilitate dialogue and promote coordination in the region’s power sector to support the acceleration of the energy transition in Southeast Asia.

SIPET, developed and managed by the CASE program, contributes to overcoming one of the biggest challenges to the clean energy transition in Southeast Asia—namely, communications and coordination among the thousands of stakeholders in the field.

SIPET’s role in accelerating the energy transition will be critically important, as energy demand is projected to grow by 80% by 2050. Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam represent nearly three-quarters of total power generation in Southeast Asia; therefore, the ability of the region to meet its development goals largely depends on the countries’ current and future energy choices. Yet, energy transition stakeholders in Southeast Asia have highlighted in survey assessments a series of common challenges: a lack of institutional capacity; a lack of platforms for timely information and intelligence sharing; excessive time spent in coordination; and duplication of work because stakeholders are not aware of others’ activities.

SIPET will tackle these challenges with four key functions: a suite of Power Sector Resources, a Project Database and Mapping Tool, a Knowledge-Sharing Hub, and a Community Forum for energy transition professionals.

–       The Power Sector Resources featured on SIPET include the Power Transition Progress Tool; a section on Power Sector Insights (both developed by CASE), and Power Plant Trackers (developed by Global Energy Monitor). Together, these resources will help energy transition professionals stay updated on the latest energy developments related to the region’s power sector transition.

–       The Project Mapping Tool, developed by CASE in cooperation with the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (ETP), maps the key stakeholders involved in energy transition projects in the region, helping donors and development partners working on the energy transition to identify and build partnership opportunities to create greater synergy and impact.

–       The SIPET Knowledge Hub is a portal for sharing news, research results, the latest publications, and upcoming events. This portal will allow practitioners in the field to easily share relevant information and news, facilitating improved dialogue and coordination across Southeast Asia’s power sectors.

–       The SIPET Community Forum will provide a platform to bring together donors and development partners to streamline information sharing and collaboration.

SIPET is designed to be modular, with the ability to include additional features going forward.  Some upcoming modules include:

·         Power Sector Insights will draw on available quantitative and qualitative data to provide insights into key trends and developments in the power sector in Southeast Asia. This section is currently under development and will be launched in January 2023.

·         SIPET currently integrates Asia-based data from three trackers developed by our partner, Global Energy Monitor (GEM): Asia Gas Tracker, Global Coal Plant Tracker, and Global Oil and Gas Extraction Tracker.  In the coming months, SIPET will add to this by integrating data from the GEM’s Global Solar Plant Tracker and the Global Wind Power Tracker.

“We are excited to launch SIPET with support from our distinguished group of international and local expert organizations who are working intensively on a range of key energy transition issues. SIPET is a one-stop platform that pulls together available information and research, facilitates evidence-based discussions, supports professionals to understand key data and trends, and greatly improves coordination and knowledge-sharing among stakeholders,” said Simon Rolland, Energy Project Director of GIZ. “Through SIPET, we aim to facilitate the narrative in the power sector towards an evidence-based energy transition that robustly supports the region’s development strategies, and towards joint actions that secure a clean, affordable and secure energy future for Southeast Asia.”

Southeast Asia is a key region in the global effort to drive climate action and achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement. In this context, SIPET encourages stakeholders working on the energy transition in Southeast Asia to join the platform as both an active member and content contributor, in an effort to create an information ecosystem that will serve the professional energy transition community and advance energy transition goals in the region.

To join the platform as a member and contributor, go to the SIPET home page and register as a member.
