Philippine Italian Association (PIA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with De La Salle University, Manila (DLSU) regarding the introduction and implementation of Italian language classes into the school’s curriculum. In attendance were PIA Executive Director and VP for Operations Tillie Pelagallo, Executive Director and VP for Culture James Freney, Italian Embassy official representative Elisabetta Valentini, DLSU president Br. Bernard S. Oca FSC, Vice President for External Relations and Internationalization Dr. Laurene Chua-Garcia, College of Liberal Arts Dean Dr. Rhoderick V. Nuncio, and International Studies Department Chair Dr. Elaine Tolentino. Also in attendance were DLSU faculty members, European Studies Association members and PIA interns.

Since the 1960’s, the Philippine Italian Association has been the Philippines’ pioneer in teaching Italian language. Over the past 10 years alone, the PIA has been developing its Italian language school in partnership with the Università per Stranieri di Siena, the leading university in teaching Italian language as a foreign language; has developed an Italian e-learning platform; was recognized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an Italian language promoter; finally, the PIA brought to the Philippines the CILS – Italian Language proficiency exams. While the COVID-19 pandemic has been putting most things on pause, PIA’s Italian language courses are only continuing to move forward with more vigor, as they partner with tertiary education institutions like Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite (LPU) and now, DLSU Manila as well.

The introduction of Italian language to the DLSU curriculum adds a new member to the growing family of language courses that the university already offers to its students at present, which include Japanese, Spanish, French, Mandarin, and Bahasa Indonesia. The MOU signing event was one full of joy and excitement for what was to come, for the new doors opened and for the bridges built between both institutions and countries. Signing on behalf of DLSU was President Br. Bernard S. Oca and Dr. Rhoderick Nuncio, and on behalf of PIA, Mr. James Freney and Ms. Tillie Pelagallo.

You never start from zero,” said Mr. Freney, referring to the many linguistic connections between Italian, English and Filipino— and indeed, this agreement only strengthens the pre-existing ties of friendship and culture between Italy and the Philippines, now directly involving the youth who will carry the prosperous relationship forward as time goes on.The teaching of Italian language classes at DLSU Manila is expected to begin in May, in the 3rd trimester of the current academic year, AY ‘22 – ‘23.
