Leaving someone’s mother at a tender age with hope in her heart that she could help her financially someday was what made Raquel C. Almencio decided to take the risk and leapt in the dark.

Raquel, who was just 16 years old then when she left her mother in Masbate but was very determined to work in Manila and see what was in stored for her acknowledging that their life on the province was really a struggle.

She started to work as house helper and while her employers were kind to her and even offered to help her go to school, Raquel seemed to be finding something else in her life then. Later on, she left her previous employer, stayed with her friend and then later on worked in a canteen as helper. It turned out that this would be the break she wanted in her life when she was encouraged by the owner of the canteen a former dragon boat team player and then became a coach to try out in the dragon boat team which she did.

Raquel was so determined and she had to bear all the body aches due to regular practice. Fate was kind to her, and her determination paid off when she the join the Dragon Boat Team of the Philippines and the Philippine Team won the overall championship in the ICF World Dragon Boat Championships held in Georgia, United States of America on September 30, 2018.
