The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has started looking for more renewable energy to supply its customers, opening a competitive bidding process for 200 megawatts (MW) of clean, round-the-clock power.
In a news release, Meralco said the bidding—known as a Competitive Selection Process (CSP)—is meant to help the utility comply with government rules that require power distributors to source a portion of their electricity from renewable energy.
The process was cleared by the Department of Energy (DOE) after Meralco received its Certificate of Conformity on December 4, 2025. The bidding forms part of Meralco’s latest power supply procurement plan approved by the DOE.
Through its Bids and Awards Committee, Meralco is inviting power generation companies to join the bidding. Interested firms must submit their Expressions of Interest by January 6. A pre-bid conference will be held on January 15, 2026, while final bids are due on February 16.
The winning bidder will supply 200 MW of renewable energy under a four-year power supply agreement. The contract is expected to take effect by January 26, subject to approval by the Energy Regulatory Commission.
“This CSP is consistent with Meralco’s ongoing efforts to expand its supply portfolio sourced from renewable energy sources whilst securing Meralco’s RPS compliance through a competitive and transparent bidding process,” Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Regulatory Management Atty. Jose Ronald V. Valles said.
Meralco said the latest bidding is part of its broader sustainability plan. The company has already secured contracts for 1,536 MW of renewable energy—exceeding its original target of 1,500 MW.
With these efforts, Meralco expects renewable energy to make up about 22% of its total power supply by 2030.
