The Embassy of Malaysia in Manila, in partnership with Makati Shangri-La, officially opened the Malaysian Food Spread, a vibrant celebration of Malaysia’s rich culinary heritage and cultural diversity. Led by His Excellency Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino, Ambassador of Malaysia to the Philippines, the event embodies the spirit of gastro-diplomacy—using food as a bridge to foster friendship, understanding, and cultural exchange between nations.

Ambassador Malik, in his remarks, underscored that Malaysia’s cuisine tells the story of its people—a harmonious blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous influences shaped by centuries of migration, trade, and shared history. “Food connects us across generations and communities. Every dish is a story of who we are,” Ambassador Castelino said, inviting guests to savor the dishes that capture Malaysia’s warmth, flavor, and unity in diversity.
The Malaysian Food Circles, running from November 5 to 16, features signature dishes such as Nasi Minyak, Rojak Pasir Bur, Kerabu Asam Pedas, and Ice Kacang, masterfully prepared by renowned Malaysian chefs in collaboration with the hotel’s culinary team. Each dish represents a culinary journey that reflects Malaysia’s cultural richness and hospitality—qualities that continue to draw Filipino travelers to its shores.
Ambassador Malik also noted that this celebration reinforces Malaysia’s position as a top tourism and culinary destination for Filipinos, citing the nearly 400,000 Filipino visitors recorded last year. With expanding air connectivity, including new routes by Firefly Airlines, Malaysia aims to welcome even more Filipino travelers to explore its cuisine, festivals, and natural wonders.
Beyond the feast, the event underscores Malaysia’s belief in food as diplomacy—a way to deepen bonds between neighbors and inspire mutual appreciation. As guests enjoyed the flavors of Malaysia, they also experienced the essence of its people: gracious, diverse, and united in spirit.
