The Embassy of Malaysia hosted a vibrant reception at Shangri-La Makati to celebrate the 68th National Day of Malaysia, gathering diplomats, government officials, business leaders, and friends of Malaysia.
The event was graced by Hon. Leo M. Herrera-Lim, Undersecretary for Migration Affairs of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, as Guest of Honour. Also in attendance were His Grace Archbishop Charles John Brown, Apostolic Nuncio and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, members of the Philippine Senate and Congress, government officials, and distinguished guests from the diplomatic and business communities.

In his keynote address, H.E. Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino, Ambassador of Malaysia to the Philippines, reflected on Malaysia’s journey since independence. He emphasized that this year’s theme, “Malaysia MADANI: Rakyat Disantuni” (People Cared For), is both a tribute to past generations and a call to safeguard unity, peace, and prosperity for the future.
Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025
Ambassador Malik also highlighted Malaysia’s leadership as ASEAN Chair in 2025 under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, noting several landmark initiatives:
The Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future, outlining a long-term vision for a stronger, more resilient ASEAN.
The ASEAN Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026–2030, advancing regional economic integration.
Progress on the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement—the world’s first binding regional digital economy pact—and the launch of the ASEAN AI Safety Network.
Deeper cooperation on sustainability and climate action, including renewable energy, the ASEAN Power Grid, and partnerships with Japan and the EU.
Expanded efforts on public health preparedness through the ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies.
The historic advancement of Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN.
“These accomplishments reflect our belief that progress must be inclusive and that no ASEAN citizen should be left behind,” Ambassador Malik said. He also assured Malaysia’s full support for the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026, underscoring the importance of continuity in ASEAN’s shared vision.
Malaysia–Philippines Friendship and Cooperation
Ambassador Malik reaffirmed the enduring friendship and close ties between Malaysia and the Philippines, rooted in shared history, culture, and aspirations. He noted that cooperation spans diverse sectors—trade, investment, Islamic banking, education, halal industry, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.
With over 800 Malaysian companies operating in the Philippines, bilateral trade continues to grow, underpinned by what the Ambassador described as the partnership’s “warmth, trust, and mutual respect.”
A Celebration of Culture and Friendship
The evening featured cultural performances, an angklung presentation by the Sisters of Mary Schools, and a video showcase on Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship. Guests also enjoyed authentic Malaysian cuisine prepared by Chef Edwin and Chef Ammar.
As part of its CSR outreach, the Embassy presented 1,000 boxes of Farm Fresh milk to the Philippine Department of Education, symbolizing Malaysia’s commitment to community partnership.
The celebration concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, cultural dances, and a lucky draw, leaving guests with a strong sense of Malaysia’s enduring friendship with the Philippines and its pivotal role in ASEAN.
