The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) and Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) are now accepting entries for the 2025 SEAMEO-Japan Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Award, the Embassy of Japan in Manila said in a news release.

Organized in collaboration with the UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education, the annual awards recognize outstanding ESD practices in elementary, junior high, and senior high schools across Southeast Asia. Since its launch in 2012, the initiative has celebrated education projects that integrate sustainability principles into learning and community engagement.

For 2025, the theme is “Fostering Schools and Surrounding Communities’ Resilience through the Revitalization of Local Wisdom in Disaster Risk Reduction.” Schools are encouraged to showcase innovative efforts that harness traditional knowledge and local practices to build community resilience against natural disasters.

The top winning school will receive a cash prize and an all-expenses-paid one-week study visit to Japan. Other outstanding entries will also be awarded monetary prizes to support the continuation of their ESD initiatives.

Interested schools may submit their entries through the SEAMEO website or Facebook page.

Deadline for submissions is August 15. Further details can be found on the SEAMEO online platforms.
