In line with its commitment to drive customer-centric initiatives that empower Filipino consumers, Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has pledged full support to the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP). RAP allows multiple end-users within the same franchise area whose individual consumption is below the 500-kilowatt threshold to join Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) to form an aggregated group and choose their own electricity supplier.

During the ceremonial switching of the country’s first retail aggregation customer, Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho emphasized the power distributor’s investments in smart metering or advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) that enables the implementation of customer choice programs like RAP.

RAP requires meters with advanced functionalities such as the measurement of consumption in five (5) minute intervals – to match the market-prescribed interval. Meter data of all RCOA and RAP customers are then read and transmitted daily to the electricity Market Operator.

“Meralco is embracing innovative technologies, not only to modernize our power infrastructure but to really empower consumers. Retail aggregation, enabled through AMI, creates opportunities for retail suppliers to bring value to consumers and fosters a more dynamic and competitive energy market,” he said.

As part of its ongoing grid modernization efforts, Meralco is advancing its AMI program that aligns with regulatory requirements and integrates smart metering solutions.

Under its proposed capital expenditure (capex) program for the 5th Regulatory Period (5RP), Meralco plans to expand its AMI which entails integration of smart metering solutions into its distribution network, facilitating the seamless transition of customers – from small residential end-users to large commercial and industrial accounts –to the contestable market.

“Through our continuous and bolder investments in AMI and grid modernization, we remain committed in making it convenient and efficient for customers who want to exercise their right to choose their electricity supplier. More than that, we are building a smarter, more resilient energy infrastructure that will benefit every Filipino consumer,” Aperocho concluded.
