“Japan is so loved. Look at this well-attended reception,” said a fellow journalist we bumped into at last week’s Japan National Day celebration, marking the 65th birthday of the Japanese emperor.

Indeed, the event was graced by the who’s who of Philippine politics, diplomacy, business, and culture. Over 800 guests attended the reception hosted by Japan’s ambassador to the Philippines, Kazuya Endo. Among the distinguished attendees were Senate President Francis Escudero, House Speaker Martin Romualdez, Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, and Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Charles Brown.

“As this is both my first National Day Reception in the Philippines and my first as Ambassador, I sought advice from several people. I was told these speeches should be brief, especially at a Japanese gathering, where everyone is simply looking forward to a sumptuous meal and some sake. I sincerely hope you will all bear with me for a few minutes, as this is my main job for tonight,” the Ambassador shared with a warm smile.

And of course, the food was characteristically Japanese: sumptuous and delicious.

Guests were treated to a gourmet selection, including sushi, sake, and fresh seafood from Japan, offered at various booths throughout the event. Thirty-two companies and organizations participated, including Hotel Okura Manila, Canon, Toyota, Choya Umeshu Co. Ltd., and Honda, among others.

The evening also featured stunning displays of Ikebana and Bonsai arrangements, complemented by a special performance of Nihon Buyo, a traditional Japanese dance known for its graceful movements and artistic expression. The Gion Higashi Song and Dance Society from Kyoto presented their rendition of Matsuzukushi, or “All Sorts of Pine Trees,” which symbolizes longevity and resilience.

Additionally, the Santo Domingo Male Chorale and the Manila Symphony Orchestra led a stirring rendition of the national anthems of both countries, reinforcing the spirit of camaraderie.

Myaku-Myaku, the official mascot of the Osaka-Kansai Expo, also made an appearance, bringing a fun and youthful energy to the festivities.

It was a touching moment when Ambassador Endo took the time to thank all those who contributed to the success of the reception, including his embassy staff, the performers, and his wife, Akiko, for her active engagement with the Filipino community.

“I would like to conclude my remarks by wishing you all good health, happiness, and the continued deepening of our friendship during His Majesty’s momentous celebration. Thank you very much. Maraming salamat po, and let us all celebrate this night together! Arigatou gozaimashita. Thank you very much,” the Ambassador said, his multilingual greeting eliciting a delighted gasp from the guests.
