In a world inundated with headlines that often evoke anxiety, Angie Quadra Balibay stands as a beacon of positivity and reliability. As the force behind Good News Pilipinas (GNP), Angie has spent over a decade reshaping how Filipinos engage with news—choosing to highlight stories that inspire, educate, and uplift.
A seasoned journalist and mentor, Angie’s journey with GNP began in 2014, eight years after it was founded in 2006. At the time, she joined Rico Hizon, a trailblazing Filipino broadcaster, on the mission to create a dedicated space for showcasing the best of the Philippines. What started as a humble advocacy site soon transformed into a respected news platform, receiving accolades such as the Gold Anvil Award and ranking 13th globally on the Feedspot aggregator of good news sites.
Angie recalls her initial involvement with GNP fondly, saying, “It’s a great platform and an even greater advocacy. I saw the potential to amplify voices and create a ripple effect of positivity.” Over the years, Angie’s work has spanned content creation, social media management, and digital marketing—pioneering GNP’s shift to a full-fledged online news entity well before the pandemic necessitated it.
Mentoring the Next Generation
While leading GNP as its Managing Editor, Angie has also nurtured the next generation of media practitioners through initiatives like the Good News Pilipinas Academy. This program provides free mentorship to students, offering hands-on experience in news writing, video production, and responsible media practices. “Our interns are our pride,” Angie says. “We teach them to embrace journalism’s principles while using modern tools like AI to make stories engaging yet trustworthy.”
The Academy is particularly popular among journalism students but welcomes aspiring writers and content creators from various disciplines who additionally want to experience website publishing, social media management, and digital marketing. By providing a structured environment that emphasizes ethical storytelling online, GNP ensures its interns graduate not just with skills but also with a deep understanding of their role in shaping society.
A Digital Pioneer
Under Angie’s leadership, GNP has thrived in the ever-evolving media landscape. From leveraging social media platforms to producing viral content, GNP has embraced the shift towards shorter, punchier formats without compromising on journalistic integrity. “We pivoted to meet people where they are—online. But we remain committed to providing well-vetted, factual stories,” Angie explains.
She’s also deeply aware of the challenges posed by the digital age, particularly the shrinking attention spans and the rise of misinformation. “Media literacy is crucial,” she asserts. “Everyone is online, but not everyone knows how to navigate the internet responsibly. Our job is to guide people toward credible information and away from the noise.”
A Vision for 2025 and Beyond
Looking ahead, Angie sees GNP expanding its influence through programs aimed at families, parents, and students. She believes that good news has the power to strengthen community bonds and instill hope. “Imagine a generation raised on stories that inspire rather than discourage. That’s the legacy we aim to build,” she shares.
Through initiatives like free mentoring for small-medium enterprises and enhanced media education, GNP continues to cement its role as a trusted voice in the Philippines.
An Invitation to Be Inspired
As Angie and her team forge ahead, their mission remains clear: to champion the stories that remind Filipinos of their resilience, ingenuity, and heart.
