City of Firsts lines up activities in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month from October 15 to 20

The world celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month every October to raise awareness about the disease and its early detection. Awareness is imperative since this disease is one of the most common forms of cancer, and one of the leading causes of death among women.

In the Philippines alone, three in every 100 Filipino women are diagnosed with breast cancer. So to help drum up awareness about breast cancer, Araneta City is undertaking activities to help inform more people about this disease and educate the public about the importance of early detection.

“Araneta City has always been about supporting worthy causes, and the campaign to raise breast cancer awareness has always been a huge thrust for us here in the City of Firsts,” Marjorie Go, Assistant Vice President for Marketing of Araneta City, said. “We believe that more people should be aware about the dangers of this disease, and the fact that it is perfectly manageable once we detect and treat it early.”

On October 15, the City of Firsts is having a series of activities for this campaign. There will be a free breast check-up at Ali Mall and Farmers Plaza to help promote early detection of the disease, and a free haircut at Farmers Plaza.

There will also be free indoor fitness activities on October 15 to promote an active and more healthy lifestyle — a free ballroom class at Farmers Plaza, and a free dance fitness class at Ali Mall. Those who will participate in the latter will not only benefit from a good workout, but they will also be able to give back as the City of Firsts will donate a special kit to a partner charity for every person who joins the activity.

Araneta City will also have a haircut-for-a-cause drive at Farmers Plaza on October 15. Every lock of hair gathered from the free haircut activity will be donated to create wigs for breast cancer patients.

Over at Gateway Mall, there will be a special photo wall decorated with flowers, a big pink ribbon, and facts about breast cancer. From October 16 to 20, shoppers may take their photos at the photo wall and share them on social media with the hashtag #BreastCancerAwareness. Five lucky netizens will be chosen to receive a thank you gift from the City of Firsts as part of the Photo Wall digital contest.

Lastly, Araneta City will be hosting a virtual forum on breast cancer via Facebook Live on October 20. The discussion will be led by the Inner Wheel Circle Club, Rotary Club of Cubao Sunrise, and Rotary Club of Kamuning Central.

“We have designed all these activities to express our support for those who are afflicted with breast cancer and for those who have survived that undoubtedly harrowing ordeal. We are proud to be part of this worthy cause and we hope through this slate of activities more people become more informed about breast cancer, early detection, and the plight of those who have this disease,” Go concluded.
