The film festival’s 21st Year presents 28 films from 16 EU member states

Shangri-La Plaza once again proudly takes part in hosting the renowned film festival Cine Europa, is the biggest international film festival in Manila, will be touring around the Philippines to celebrate the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

This is a proud product of synergy between the European Union Delegation, EU member states embassies and cultural institutes, together with Filipino cultural partners throughout the country.

There are twenty-eight worth watching movies from 16 European Union Member States like Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom), as well as Norway. will be shown at the Shang Red Carpet Cinema from December 6 to 16. Among these are works from the legendary film makers like Lars von Trier and Jean-Luc Godard.

In their desire to integrate a more specialized educational aspect of to the festival, the Cine Europa also included lectures from one of our country’s most illustrious film historians, Nick De Ocampo, and also a forum to be conducted by another celebrated filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist Elvert Banares.

Also included topics for discussion on 100 years of Philippine Cinema and its European Influence, Jose Nepomuceno and the Birth of Philippine Cinema, Understanding Culture through Film: Hidden Casmera for the 100 Years of Philippine Cinema, and The Growth of Regional Cinema Promoting Culture.

Cine Europa being the longest running international film festival in the country continues to promote closer ties between the EU and the Philippines through the medium of film. Since it started in 1997, the Cinema Europa has been showcasing the cinematic creative production of Europe to Filipinos, and consequently , its culture and spirit.

In his speech at the opening of Cine Europa film screening of “Selfie 69” held at the Red Carpet Cinema at Shang Plaza , Jérôme Rivière, the First Secretary, European Union delegation to the Philippines said that apart from the Celebration of European Year of Cultural Heritage, the Cine Europa came into being for more people to discover Europe, have the sense of belonging with other European state members. enhance relationships, bridge gaps and break stereo types and  transcend borders by enjoying quality and well created movies.

On the part of Shangri-La Plaza, the gracious host of Cine Europa 2018, Lala Fojas, Executive Vice President and General Manager said, “That they will continue to support Cine Europa and any endeavor that promotes arts and culture, education and fostering deeper understanding of various culture”.
