Energy efficiency is more critical than ever, giving households and businesses greater control over energy consumption while helping manage costs and reduce environmental impact.
Managing Supply Amid Global Uncertainty
Historically, electricity demand in the Philippines spikes during the dry season. This year, geopolitical tensions are adding pressure to global energy prices. As the country’s largest electricity distributor, Meralco is taking proactive steps to secure supply and stabilize prices.
“We want to ensure adequate supply of power and manage price volatility as responsibly as possible,” said Meralco Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan.
The company is reviewing its fuel mix—including liquefied natural gas, coal, and diesel—coordinating closely with power suppliers, and fully supporting the government’s push for energy efficiency.
Energy Efficiency as Bayanihan
Meralco emphasizes that every household and business can contribute to energy resilience.
“By practicing energy efficiency, consumers can better manage their electricity bills while helping mitigate the impact of external factors on energy costs,” said Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga.
Meralco data shows electricity demand increases by 20% to 33% during the dry season due to higher use of cooling appliances like air conditioners. To help consumers optimize energy use, Meralco offers practical tips across key household appliances:
Cooling Appliances: Air-Conditioning Units

Choose the right size: Select an aircon unit that matches the space requirements. Set optimal temperature: DOE recommends 25°C. Every degree lower can increase energy use by 5–7%. Regular maintenance: Clean filters, check ducts and refrigerant, and follow manufacturer schedules. Consider inverter units: Inverter aircons can save 30–64% in electricity compared to conventional units.
Refrigerators

Avoid overfilling: Keep the refrigerator about two-thirds full for efficient airflow. Store food properly: Do not put hot food directly in the fridge. Check door seals: Use the paper test—if the paper slides out easily, the seal may need replacement.
Lighting
Use natural light: Turn off lights when not needed. Switch to LEDs: Replace incandescent or fluorescent bulbs with LED lights for maximum savings.
Washing Machines
Maximize loads: Wash full or near-full loads to conserve energy and water. Follow fabric settings: Avoid over-washing to maintain efficiency.
Tools for Smarter Energy Use

Meralco also offers an Appliance Calculator via the My Meralco App, allowing customers to track the power consumption and cost of their appliances, making energy-efficient choices easier than ever.
“Through simple energy-efficient practices, we can ensure reliable service while promoting sustainability and resilience during seasonal and global challenges,” Zaldarriaga said.
