The Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport Authority (APECO) is advancing plans to develop a Pacific-facing international port as rising geopolitical tensions expose vulnerabilities in traditional global maritime trade routes.

Speaking during the Philippines Ports & Logistics 2026 forum in ParaƱaque City on Wednesday, APECO President and CEO Gil G. Taway IV said recent conflicts in the Middle East underscore the structural risks confronting the heavily used western maritime corridor linking Asia and Europe.

ā€œThe traditional western maritime corridor remains the backbone of Asia–Europe trade, but it is also exposed to multiple geopolitical chokepoints. Recent tensions in the Middle East highlight how concentrated global trade routes remain vulnerable to disruption,ā€ Taway said.

Key maritime chokepoints along this route include the Strait of Malacca, Strait of Hormuz, Bab el‑Mandeb Strait, and the Suez Canal—all critical arteries for global shipping and energy transport.

Against this backdrop, Taway noted that the Pacific trade corridor is gaining strategic importance as companies and governments look to diversify shipping routes and strengthen supply chain resilience.

To position the Philippines within this evolving maritime landscape, APECO is pushing forward with its flagship infrastructure project, the Casiguran International New Port, a greenfield port development in Aurora Province.

ā€œAPECO offers itself as a new gateway, a new trans-Pacific gateway. Even without wars or geopolitical tensions, this gateway that APECO is offering is highly significant for global trade,ā€ Taway said.

Facing the Pacific Ocean, the proposed port is envisioned to support manufacturing, logistics, and export activities while strengthening the Philippines’ connectivity with the broader Asia-Pacific region and global markets.

ā€œAPECO’s location gives the Philippines a strategic vantage point in the Pacific corridor. By developing a modern port here, we create an additional gateway that strengthens the country’s role in regional and global supply chains,ā€ Taway said.

He added that expanding port infrastructure on the country’s Pacific seaboard could help build a more resilient maritime network and provide alternative gateways for international trade.
