There’s no stopping the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) in embracing digital transformation and sustainable energy solutions. For years now, the Manuel V. Pangilinan-led distribution utility has been channeling its investments to programs that create smarter, more personalized experiences for its over eight million customers, while building an intelligent grid that supports the nation’s clean energy goals.

Meralco is looking at the long-term by shaping a sustainable, customer-centric energy future for the country through innovation and collaboration with global technology leaders and local talent.

In fact, it has already deployed key innovations such as the Wireless Private Network (WPN) to enhance grid automation and security; the Meralco Data Platform (MDP) which leverages big data and AI to streamline operations; and the Meralco Interactive Data Assistant (MIDAS), the company’s AI-powered interactive assistant.

But the company’s initiatives do not stop there. As the energy grid continuously evolves, it is shifting toward a smarter, more flexible system driven by renewables, electric vehicles (EVs), and emerging energy technologies—empowering consumers to become “prosumers.”

“Digital transformation isn’t transformative because of platforms and applications. It is transformative because it removes friction and challenges from people’s lives and adds value to their daily experiences,” Meralco Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer Ferdinand O. Geluz said.

During the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025, Meralco unveiled its comprehensive 7Ds Digital Transformation Strategy, its blueprint designed to modernize the country’s power distribution network.

This strategy comprises interrelated projects of varying scales and complexity and encompasses seven key pillars: Digital Customer, Digital Grid, Digital Employee, Digital Enterprise, Data Platforms and AI, Digital Infrastructure, and Digital Communications.

By integrating these elements, Meralco enhances operational efficiency, customer experience, and AI-driven decision-making in the power utilities sector.

To keep up with advancing technologies, the power distributor seeks meaningful partnerships with global technology innovators to advance the country’s energy systems including Itron, Inc., an American tech firm providing products and services for energy and water resource management.

Itron’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution with Intelligent Connectivity will initially manage 73,000 endpoints across Metro Manila, which will then expand to cover the rest of Meralco’s service areas.

With Itron’s solution, Meralco will enable near real-time, two-way communication between its operations and customer endpoints—allowing faster outage detection and restoration, improved billing accuracy, and greater transparency in energy consumption.

In line with its push for innovation and sustainability, Meralco also recently rolled out the Nuclear Energy Strategic Transition (NEST) program —a flagship initiative designed to support the integration of nuclear power as a long-term, low-carbon component of the Philippine energy mix.

This program adopts a multi-track approach to evaluate all viable pathways for nuclear power deployment in the Philippines, such as initiating large-scale greenfield projects, exploring the potential deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs), and studying the feasibility of rehabilitating the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.

Meralco is exploring with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) how it can accelerate the adoption of new energy technologies, including nuclear energy.

Seeing SMRs as a future-ready solution, the power distributor also teamed up with DL Engineering & Construction—another Korean firm—to explore the technology’s deployment in the country, particularly for off-grid areas.

It also entered a strategic collaboration with state-controlled French multinational electric utility company Electricité de France SA (EDF) to explore the potential of nuclear energy deployment.

“Innovation and technology amplify each other, creating possibilities we couldn’t imagine alone. But at the heart of it all are people with purpose, driving progress forward,” Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho said.

Pushing boundaries through collaboration

At Meralco, innovation is a mindset that drives bold ideas and practical solutions—from AI-powered customer service to advanced grid technologies.

Every year, Meralco holds its Innovation Month to bring together employees, partners, and students who share a commitment to shaping the future of energy through creative and digital transformation initiatives.

“Here at Meralco, innovation is not just a week-long celebration. It’s not just a program. It is a mindset, a discipline, and a culture we build together,” Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Information, Communication, Technology & Transformation Rocky D. Bacani said. “Innovation isn’t about predicting the future. It’s about creating it—idea by idea, project by project, spark by spark.”
