The Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc. (PHILEXPORT) has welcomed the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the Philippines and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), describing it as a strategic milestone in strengthening the country’s economic engagement with the Middle East.
PHILEXPORT said the UAE is not only a key export destination but also a critical gateway to wider markets across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Africa, and other regions, positioning Philippine exporters for broader global reach.
“The signing of the CEPA with the UAE is a major boost for Philippine exporters and for the country as a whole,” said PHILEXPORT President Sergio R. Ortiz-Luis Jr. “Beyond being an important export market, the UAE serves as a strategic global trade hub. This agreement will help Philippine exporters expand their footprint in the Middle East and beyond, while creating new opportunities for investment, employment, and inclusive growth at home.”
Philippine exports to the UAE reached nearly USD 390 million last year, with strong momentum carrying into 2025. PHILEXPORT said the agreement is expected to deepen market access, reduce trade barriers, and improve competitiveness, particularly for priority sectors such as electronics, food and agribusiness, machinery, and tropical fruits—including bananas and pineapples—along with their related value chains.
Ortiz-Luis noted that the CEPA supports national export growth strategies by establishing clearer trade rules, lowering tariffs, and providing greater predictability for exporters.
“The agreement benefits not only established exporters but also opens pathways for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to scale up, compete internationally, and contribute to inclusive economic growth across communities,” he said.
PHILEXPORT also commended the Philippine government’s negotiating team for securing an agreement that advances national development goals while addressing the needs of the export sector. The confederation said it looks forward to working closely with government agencies and industry stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of the Philippines–UAE CEPA and to maximize its benefits for exporters and the broader economy.
