When Ukrainian bandurist Sarah Straschko — now based in Australia and devoted to preserving Ukrainian culture visited the Philippines in September 2023, she sat down with THEPHILBIZNEWS for an exclusive interview. In this rare encounter and live performance, she illuminated the real origin of one of the world’s most beloved holiday melodies: “Carol of the Bells.”

Through the strings of her bandura, Sarah Straschko carries the story of Ukraine — its culture, its resilience, and the melody of hope — bringing Ukraine’s heart to the world and sharing the true heritage of Carol of the Bells.

Though the song is widely known as a Christmas standard, its roots are deeply and unmistakably Ukrainian.

The melody was composed in 1916 by Ukrainian musician Mykola Leontovych and was originally titled “Shchedryk,” a traditional New Year’s chant meant to bring blessings, abundance, and hope. The original lyrics tell the story of a swallow flying into a household, heralding prosperity and a fruitful year ahead.

Faith and resilience shine bright this Christmas at ancient monastery of The Holy Dormition Svyatohirsk Lavra in Donbas. Shot last December 2024 by THEPHILBIZNEWS, monks and faithful gather in prayer nearly four years into Russia’s invasion, reminding the world that Ukraine’s spirit endures — a living reflection of the hope in Carol of the Bells.

“People know the melody, but not its true story,” Straschko shared. “Shchedryk is a blessing. It is a piece of Ukraine’s heart, a melody of hope, new beginnings, and heritage.

During her visit, Straschko performed Shchedryk on the bandura, Ukraine’s national stringed instrument. Her stirring rendition — haunting yet uplifting — gave Filipino audiences a rare glimpse into the rich musical soul of Ukraine.

A monk lights candles inside a Ukrainian church during a liturgical service, praying for an end to the illegal Russian invasion and for the world to stand with Ukraine. This Christmas, as the spirit of Carol of the Bells — a melody of hope, renewal, and blessings — echoes from Ukraine to the world, faith and resilience shine brighter than ever.

The journey of Shchedryk from Ukraine to global fame began in 1922, when the Ukrainian National Chorus performed it at Carnegie Hall in New York. Its distinct harmonies caught the attention of American composer Peter J. Wilhousky, who later wrote new English lyrics in 1936, transforming the piece into the festive carol now known worldwide as “Carol of the Bells.”

This adaptation helped popularize the melody across the globe — but over time, its Ukrainian origin faded from public memory.

For Straschko, ensuring that this heritage is not forgotten is part of her calling. Though based in Australia, she performs around the world, sharing Ukraine’s history, identity, and spirit through the bandura.

Ukraine’s culture and music are part of its identity. Preserving and sharing them is a form of solidarity and resilience,” she said.

As Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty and cultural heritage, stories like Shchedryk carry renewed urgency. Artists like Sarah Straschko remind the world that Ukrainian identity — expressed through its music, art, and traditions — must be safeguarded and celebrated.

The melody that brings joy to millions every holiday season is more than a carol, it is a testament to centuries of Ukrainian brilliance. Through her artistry, Straschko ensures that Ukraine’s voice continues to resonate across continents.
