In recognition of her remarkable contributions to strengthening Japan–Philippines academic and cultural exchange, Dr. Hiroko Nagai, professor and former director of the Ateneo de Manila University School of Social Sciences Japanese Studies Program, received the Foreign Minister’s Commendation from the Government of Japan.

The award was formally presented during a ceremony hosted by Ambassador Kazuya Endo on November 3, 2025, at the Ambassador’s residence in Manila.
Also in attendance were Japan Foundation Manila (JFM) Director Ben Suzuki, University of the Philippines Diliman College of Music Dean Dr. Ma. Patricia Brillantes Silvestre, and Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) President Melvin Lee.
In his message, Ambassador Endo lauded Dr. Nagai for her outstanding career as a scholar and musician whose works have deepened mutual understanding between Japan and the Philippines.

“Dr. Nagai’s work has truly enriched our countries’ friendship. As we approach the 70th anniversary of our normalized relations, we look forward to her continued contributions—bringing our people closer through insightful lectures and compelling concerts,” he said.
The evening concluded with a captivating koto performance by Dr. Nagai, featuring her piece Improvisation VII: Kaibuturan, which highlighted her mastery and dedication to promoting Japanese music and culture in the Philippines.

The Foreign Minister’s Commendation is one of Japan’s highest recognitions, given to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to international relations. The Government of Japan extended its heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Nagai, affirming that her lifelong commitment has greatly strengthened the enduring friendship between the two nations.
