Japanese Ambassador Kazuya Endo reaffirmed Japan’s strong partnership with the Philippines in advancing sustainable and responsible aquaculture practices during the National Industry Dialogue for a Responsible and Sustainable Aquaculture Supply Chain, organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Makati City.

The two-day event, held on October 27–28, 2025, forms part of the Japan-funded Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Supply Chains (RISSC) Project, which promotes decent work, fair labor standards, and sustainability across key Philippine industries, particularly aquaculture.

The dialogue gathered major stakeholders from both public and private sectors, including Labor Secretary Bienvenido E. Laguesma, Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., UN Resident Coordinator Arnaud Peral, and ILO Philippines Country Director Khalid Hassan, all delivered remarks emphasizing the importance of collaboration in building resilient and ethical supply chains.

“Japan is proud to be among the largest voluntary contributors to the ILO in the Asia-Pacific region, having supported technical cooperation in the labor sector for over five decades,” Ambassador Endo said in his message. “Today’s discussions can help uplift the quality of life of aquaculture workers. As one of the Philippines’ key industries, improved labor practices in this sector can drive more sustainable and inclusive economic growth.”

During the succeeding session, Embassy of Japan First Secretary Yuki Suzuki shared Japan’s experiences in expanding social protection for vulnerable workers, citing practical examples and policy approaches that could guide similar efforts in the Philippines.

The RISSC Project aims to boost productivity and sustainable development in the Philippine fisheries and aquaculture industry by promoting decent work conditions, enhancing social protection, and upholding workers’ dignity.

This initiative underscores the enduring partnership between Japan and the Philippines, reflecting Japan’s continued commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth, ethical labor practices, and inclusive development in the country.
