Indonesia’s Chief Legal Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra assured THEPHILBIZNEWS that Jakarta and other cities remain safe amid ongoing protests, stressing that the government is pursuing dialogue while upholding law and order.
“The situation is under control. Jakarta and other cities now safe. There are some demonstrations happening, but not too much. The Executive Secretary and Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology invited leaders of students from prominent universities to the palace last night. The dialogue was very good. It signaled that both sides are trying to bridge opinions and develop mutual understanding,” Yusril said.
Yusril emphasized that President Prabowo Subianto has directed authorities to respect the people’s right to peaceful protest, while cracking down on lawless acts.
“People demonstrating and protesting will not be disturbed, as it is their right to express their opinions and aspirations. But firm action awaits those who carry out arson, vandalism, looting, and incite crime. The same goes for rule-breaking authorities,” he told THEPHILBIZNEWS in WhatsApp message.
The government has also formed a monitoring team to ensure law enforcement officers adhere to human rights standards following concerns about police brutality. Yusril underscored that even those suspected of violations will be afforded due process and the presumption of innocence.
The protests, which began on August 25, were initially sparked by anger over parliamentary perks before expanding into broader discontent about inequality and police conduct. At least 10 people have died, while some officials, including Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, saw their homes targeted in unrest.
Despite the unrest, Yusril reaffirmed the government’s commitment to democratic freedoms. “We will guarantee the rights of the people and students who demonstrate peacefully. Indonesia supports dialogue and we always advocate for the rule of law,” he said to THEPHILBIZNEWS.
