“Food diplomacy may, well, be the most delightful diplomacy of all. It reminds us that the shortest path between nations is not always through politics, but often through the palate.”

With these words, Brazilian Ambassador to the Philippines Gilberto Fonseca Guimarães de Moura set the tone for an evening where culture, cuisine, and camaraderie came together.

Marking its Philippine debut, renowned Brazilian steakhouse Fogo de Chão partnered with the Embassy of Brazil in Manila, global food giants Marfig and BRF, and local distributor Alternatives Food Corporation (AFC) to host an exclusive reception for Flavors of Brazil: A Culinary Experience.

“Tonight is about much more than food. It’s about friendship, discovery, and joy,” the envoy said, emphasizing how Brazil and the Philippines “feel very close when we sit together at the table” despite the distance on the map.

He pointed out surprising parallels: words like carne and pão that sound familiar, and dishes like salpicão that echo the Filipino lechon.

The star of the night? Traditional Brazilian Churrasco (barbecue). Guests feasted on Marfig and BRF’s premium proteins—beef, pork, and chicken—served tableside in true Brazilian style. (This writer highly recommends the picanha / top sirloin and the sausage as must-try dishes at Fogo de Chão.)

The ambassador reminded guests that every plate carried Brazil’s heritage: “Each bite carries not only protein, but also a piece of Brazil’s tradition, its dedication to quality, and its joy of sharing.”

The evening also recognized individuals who have strengthened Brazil-Philippines trade and cultural ties, including Ambassador de Moura himself, Counselor Gerson Gimenes, Secretary Igor Carneiro, Agricultural Attaché Virginia Carpi, and Marfig’s Kawshik Sehwani.

The night was filled not only with savory meats and warm conversations but also with live Bossa Nova and Samba performances, adding rhythm and color to the celebration. It was a reminder that food is never just about eating; it is about connecting, celebrating, and sharing.

As Ambassador de Moura perfectly put it: “Food is never just nourishment, but true celebration.” And on that night, Brazil’s flavors found a welcome home in Filipino hearts.
