With intensified southwest monsoon (Habagat) rains raising the risk of flooding in various parts of Luzon, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has placed its crews on heightened alert and assured customers of a prompt response to any power-related concerns.
The utility giant said it is closely monitoring weather updates and maintaining coordination with key government agencies to ensure swift action should service interruptions occur due to adverse weather conditions.
“We remind our customers to take extra precautions to ensure their safety, especially with the increased threat of flooding which poses a greater risk of electrical accidents,” said Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications.
Meralco is urging the public—particularly those in flood-prone areas—to observe the following safety measures:
Immediately switch off the main electrical power or circuit breaker if floodwaters begin to enter the home.
Avoid handling electrical equipment, circuit breakers, or fuses with wet hands or while standing on wet surfaces.
Unplug all appliances and turn off permanently connected equipment. Remove light bulbs if possible.
Stay away from exposed or dangling wires.
Have a licensed electrician inspect your home’s electrical system before switching the power back on after flooding.
Customers needing assistance or wishing to report power outages can reach Meralco via its official social media pages—Facebook (www.facebook.com/meralco) and X (@meralco)—or contact the Meralco Hotline at 16211. Mobile users may also text 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211.
