Singapore marked its 60th National Day on August 6 with a resounding message of partnership, sustainability, and regional cooperation, particularly with the Philippines and the rest of ASEAN.

At a well-attended reception in Manila, Singapore Ambassador to the Philippines Constance See described her country as “an improbable nation” that has “survived and thrived through our resolve, unity of purpose and a certain daring and boldness of spirit.”

“My heart swells with pride when I reflect on our journey,” said Ambassador See. “I get goosebumps each time I sing our national anthem, knowing it captures the hopes and aspirations of a nation forged in adversity.”

Singapore’s story, she emphasized, has always been about forging connections, and among its strongest partnerships is that with the Philippines.

“As we celebrate National Day, we also honor our partnership with the Philippines, one of our most trusted and steadfast friends,” she said.

Singapore has consistently ranked among the Philippines’ top investors, with investments increasing by nearly 40% over the past five years. The ambassador attributed this growth to Singapore’s “confidence and desire to participate in the Philippines’ growth.” She also paid tribute to the large and vibrant Filipino community in Singapore, calling their contributions “invaluable.”

Looking ahead, Ambassador See highlighted new and emerging areas of cooperation between the two nations. She cited Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s visit to Manila in June and his meeting with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., where both leaders pledged to deepen cooperation in renewable energy and carbon markets.

“These efforts will support both our countries’ climate goals, boost energy resilience and unlock new opportunities in the green economy—not just for our two countries, but for the entire ASEAN region,” she said. “This includes putting in place the building blocks for the new ASEAN Power Grid.”

Ambassador See also underscored Singapore and the Philippines’ joint efforts in biodiversity conservation. A recent success story involved the release of the critically endangered Negros bleeding-heart pigeon back into its natural habitat in the Negros and Panay islands.

“This is one programme, but it symbolises what we can achieve working side by side—for sustainability, for future generations and for the common good,” she said.

As the Philippines prepares to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026, Singapore pledged its full support.

“In a world that is increasingly fragmented and contested, these principles matter even more—especially for small states seeking space to make independent choices and shape our own futures,” she said, referring to the region’s commitment to international law and a rules-based international order.

“To my fellow Singaporeans,” she added, “here we are at 60. We have every reason to rejoice, and much to be proud of. Let’s keep going with unity and purpose.”
