Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has partnered with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) and the Quezon City local government to advance the use of renewable energy (RE) in Metro Manila.
The three parties signed a tripartite agreement aimed at developing public-private models that support the national government’s target of increasing the country’s renewable energy share to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040.
For Quezon City, the initiative complements its broader sustainability agenda as a member of C40 Cities, a global network of cities committed to addressing climate change.
“Our priority is to make energy cleaner, more reliable, and more accessible—not only for city operations but for our households and businesses,” said QC Mayor Josefina “Joy” Belmonte. “This partnership with ERC and Meralco establishes clear processes, better coordination, and stronger support for our clean energy transition.”
Under the agreement, the partnership includes Streamlining the processing of net metering and distributed energy resource (DER) applications, boosting public awareness of RE programs and policies; and establishing a Meralco Service Booth at Quezon City Hall to assist residents and businesses.
Net metering allows customers with eligible RE systems, such as rooftop solar panels, to export excess electricity to the grid and earn credits to offset their power bills. Quezon City currently has nearly 2,500 net metering customers, the highest number in Meralco’s franchise area.
Outgoing ERC Chairperson Monalisa C. Dimalanta emphasized, “The net metering program is a clear example of how we can empower Filipinos to participate in shaping the country’s energy future.”
Meralco Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer Ferdinand O. Geluz added, “This agreement reflects our shared vision of advancing renewable energy and consumer empowerment. Meralco remains committed to supporting the government’s energy transition initiatives and driving meaningful change.”
This partnership builds on a similar initiative with the ERC and Pasig City, reinforcing Meralco’s commitment to accelerate the adoption of sustainable energy solutions across its franchise area.
