The surprising strong performance of former Senators Bam Aquino and Kiko Pangilinan in the 2025 senatorial elections is a clear reflection of the Filipino people’s renewed demand for accountability and reform-oriented leadership, according to Stratbase Group President Dindo Manhit.
“Their impressive return to the political stage defied early pre-election surveys, and their resurgence carries a powerful message from the Filipino people—a renewed demand for accountability, human rights, and reform-oriented leadership,” Manhit said in a news release.
“Former Senators Aquino and Pangilinan, long recognized for their unwavering advocacy for transparency, good governance, and social justice, offered clear and resonant platforms that addressed the pressing needs of the electorate. Aquino’s emphasis on free education and job creation, and Pangilinan’s passionate push for agricultural development and food security, struck a deep chord with a population burdened by inflation, hunger, and lack of livelihood opportunities,” he explained.
Manhit noted that the “independence” of Aquino and Pangilinan also gave them credibility and made them appealing to many Filipinos.

“Running outside the shadows of the polarized Marcos and Duterte factions, they became symbols of principled, reformist alternatives. For many Filipinos, their votes for Aquino and Pangilinan served as a ‘revenge vote’ against political toxicity, corruption, and empty promises,” he said.
Manhit underscored that the surge in support from young voters, who make up a significant portion of the electorate, was another key factor in their performance.
He also pointed out that the same behavior is mirrored in the party-list race, where Akbayan is currently leading the partial count.
“Akbayan is known for its progressive stance on good governance and human rights. Their lead in the party-list race is another strong signal that Filipinos, especially the youth, are reclaiming their power through informed and values-driven choices,” he explained.
Manhit also emphasized that other top-ranking candidates such as former Senate President Tito Sotto, former Senator Panfilo Lacson, and ACT-CIS Party-list Representative Erwin Tulfo are also known for their strong anti-corruption stances.

“Other candidates who have performed well in the senatorial race also reflect this yearning for accountability. Sotto, Lacson, and Tulfo, known for their tough stance against corruption and inefficiency, are ranking high, reinforcing the electorate’s hunger for public servants who will clean up the system,” he said.
Meanwhile, candidates like Senator Bong Go, Senator Bato Dela Rosa, and Sagip Party-list Representative Rodante Marcoleta continue to perform well because of their connection to prominent political families and programs like the Malasakit Center.
Looking ahead, Manhit called for unity and accountability from both the elected leaders and the citizens.
“As the dust settles, one thing is clear: the Filipino people have spoken through the ballot. Their choices reflect not only frustration but a desire for leaders who listen, act, and are genuinely accountable. This democratic decision must be respected,” he said.
“Now, it is time for real unity. We are one nation under one flag. It is time to put an end to division and begin the hard work of nation-building. The newly elected senators must focus on addressing the urgent issues of inflation, hunger, and poverty with urgency and compassion. And while we entrust them with the mandate to lead, we, the people, must remain vigilant. Let us continue to demand truth, transparency, and accountability,” Manhit added.
