Lawyer Paz Benavidez II, Assistant Secretary for Policy and Planning at the Department of Agriculture (DA), has been elected as the Chairwoman of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture during the 20th session held in Rome, it was learned Tuesday.
Benavidez’s election is historic as she becomes the first Philippine representative to hold this prestigious position, the DA said in a news release.
The Commission, which is the only permanent intergovernmental body of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) dedicated to biological diversity for food and agriculture, focuses on policies for the sustainable use, conservation, and equitable sharing of these essential resources.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. expressed immense pride in Atty. Benavidez’s accomplishment.
“This is a very proud moment for the DA family. Assistant Secretary Benavidez’s election as the first Filipino to head the Commission speaks volumes not only about her personal achievements but also the wealth of talent within the DA,” he said.
Assistant Secretary Benavidez, who represented the Philippine delegation, will serve a two-year term as chairwoman, concluding in 2027 at the 21st session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA).
As chairwoman, she will lead discussions and decision-making processes, ensuring the smooth functioning of the FAO’s advisory body on genetic resources. Her leadership will play a key role in advancing global efforts to preserve and sustainably manage genetic resources for food and agriculture.
The FAO, established by the UN to secure food for future generations, develops innovative ways to improve global food security. It sets global standards and collaborates with governments and the private sector to ensure food quality and safety.
The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture was created in 1983 to address plant genetic resources. Today, it includes 179 member states and the European Union, highlighting its global importance in shaping sustainable agricultural practices.
