In the vibrant city of Ormoc, where life blends simplicity with ambition, one family’s dream transformed into a legacy that’s touched countless lives. Mayong’s Bakeshop & Snack House, a brand synonymous with delicious burgers and heartwarming baked goods, didn’t just grow from a humble snack stall into a celebrated institution—it became a testament to perseverance, innovation, and community spirit.
Humble Beginnings: A Dream Takes Root
It all began in 1986, when the Rodriguez brothers launched a small snack house in Ormoc. With only two employees and a simple menu of siopao and burgers, they planted the seeds of Mayong’s Bakeshop. Perok Rodriguez, one of the founders, reminisced, “We were just looking for a way to bring something different to our city. Burgers weren’t as popular back then, and we wanted to offer a taste of something new.”
With each passing year, their dedication to quality and consistency paid off. The humble snack house expanded its menu, introduced unique twists like the now-iconic pickle-on-top burger, and gained a loyal customer base. The addition of a bakery to their operations further cemented Mayong’s reputation as a trusted homegrown brand.
Family Values and Innovation
Central to Mayong’s growth was the family’s commitment to hard work and innovation. The siblings drew inspiration from their mother, who had been a baker long before the snack house was conceived. “She’d bake bread that was soft, filling, and full of flavor. We carried that same standard into everything we made,” shared Perok.
Even their branding carried a personal touch, with the name “Mayong” being a tribute to their eldest brother’s nickname. Over time, their menu, from savory snacks to freshly baked bread, reflected the essence of their family values—homemade, heartfelt, and distinctively Filipino.
Weathering the Storms
The journey wasn’t without its challenges. Typhoon Yolanda, one of the most devastating natural disasters in Philippine history, tested the resilience of the Rodriguezes and their business. Supply chains were disrupted, operations were halted, and the community faced dire circumstances. Yet, Mayong’s stood firm.
“We slashed prices and kept our stores running, not for profit, but to support our community,” Perok recounted. “People needed bread. Some even tried hoarding to resell at triple the price, but we ensured everyone had access.”
This unwavering commitment to their customers earned them immense respect and loyalty. Mayong’s didn’t just survive Yolanda; it emerged stronger, embodying the spirit of service and resilience.
Growth Beyond Expectations
From a single stall to a network of 33 branches across Leyte and Samar, Mayong’s has grown into a regional powerhouse. Its professionalized operations now include over 350 employees, a testament to the Rodriguezes’ foresight and dedication.
The company’s unique approach to adaptation and learning has been pivotal. Perok emphasized the importance of constant education: “I never took formal business courses, but I attended seminars and sought opportunities to learn. Growth comes from being open to new ideas and challenges.”
During the pandemic, when many businesses struggled, Mayong’s adapted swiftly. By leveraging their structured operations and loyal workforce, they kept all their branches operational, ensuring that no employee was left behind.
Building a Legacy
The Rodriguez family’s vision extends beyond business. Through partnerships with organizations like the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Mayong’s has introduced innovative products, such as nutrient-enriched bread to combat malnutrition. Their initiatives reflect a deep-rooted commitment to giving back.
Even as they look toward expansion beyond Region 8, the family ensures that the next generation is prepared to uphold their values. “We’re exposing our kids to the business, not by force, but by letting them experience its operations. Hopefully, they’ll carry on what we’ve built,” shared Rina Rodriguez, Perok’s wife and the company’s CFO.
Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Mayong’s story is rich with lessons for anyone dreaming of starting a business.
- Focus on Your “Why”: “There will always be reasons to stop,” Rina noted. “But when you’re clear on your purpose, it becomes easier to persevere.”
- Adapt and Innovate: From introducing unique products to adjusting to crises like Typhoon Yolanda and the pandemic, Mayong’s exemplifies the power of flexibility.
- Community Matters: By prioritizing their customers and employees, the Rodriguezes built trust and loyalty that have sustained their business through decades.
A Bright Future
As Mayong’s Bakeshop & Snack House looks to expand nationwide and perhaps internationally, it carries with it the legacy of its founders’ hard work, vision, and love for their community.
“We didn’t set out to create a big brand,” Perok admitted. “We just wanted to offer something good and honest. The rest followed.”
