March 8 marks a special day of recognition for women worldwide, celebrating their rights and the remarkable contributions they’ve made to build a more inclusive society.
As part of this global celebration, the Italian Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines Inc. (ICCPI) recently hosted its 3rd Women Lead Conference at Dusit Thani, Makati City, bringing together some of the most inspiring women leaders and changemakers from various industries.
The event’s “Women in Profession & Careers” panel, moderated by Ms. Jacques Castillo, president and CEO of Mabuhay Energy Corporation, offered invaluable insights and empowering advice for women striving to make their mark in their respective fields. The conference was a reminder that, no matter the challenges, women are unstoppable forces of change.
Here are some key takeaways shared by the panelists:
1. Overcoming challenges in male-dominated industries
In a world where certain industries are still largely male-dominated, these women leaders showed that empathy, resilience, and heart are crucial in overcoming obstacles.
Ms. Elvie Sanchez-Quiazon, vice president of Bellevue Hotel, shared how active listening and empathy have been her tools for handling guests’ complaints and building strong relationships in the hospitality industry.
Meanwhile, Ms. Abbie Casanova, president and CEO of SB Finance Inc., highlighted the importance of embracing discomfort and bouncing back from setbacks. Reflecting on her journey through both the Asian Financial Crisis and personal experiences like childbirth, she aptly said: “We’re not always comfortable — but we’re made for greatness.”

Ms. Judee Quiazon, executive director of BNI Philippines, echoed this sentiment by explaining that in dealing with successful business leaders, she had moments of doubt but later realized that leadership is about following one’s heart, regardless of the industry or path.
Young women leader Charmaine Co, president of the Philippine Young Entrepreneurs Association (PYEA), emphasized perseverance, learning from trial and error, and building partnerships—efforts that have helped PYEA forge meaningful connections, including with the ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Council.
2. Achieving work-life balance
As women juggle multiple roles, from being professionals to mothers and caregivers, achieving balance becomes crucial. Ms. Co emphasized the importance of training employees and ensuring the knowledge and understanding of the industry are replicated within the team. For Ms. Quiazon, it’s about being a “connector,” surrounding herself with like-minded leaders and fostering an environment of shared goals and vision.
Ms. Casanova introduced the concept of “work-life integration,” highlighting that a holistic approach to both work and personal life is key to staying active and healthy. She encourages women to embrace activities like marathons or spa sessions to rejuvenate. Ms. Sanchez-Quiazon also shared her approach to balancing her work, family life, and personal growth, noting how learning about “Gen Z” language helped her connect with younger clients and stay relevant in her field.
3. Building confidence
Confidence, according to these accomplished women, starts from within. It’s about self-validation, perseverance, and surrounding oneself with mentors, allies, and supportive people who lift you up.
Ms. Co stressed the importance of grit and tenacity in building confidence, while Ms. Quiazon encouraged women to empower themselves through healthy conversations and self-engagement.
Ms. Casanova added that being diplomatic and inclusive, especially by involving other women in conversations, strengthens confidence and fosters growth.
Ms. Sanchez-Quiazon reminded women to believe in themselves, face challenges head-on, and show up assertively—because women are truly invincible.

The event’s success was a testament to the power of women coming together to share their stories, challenges, and victories. Among the attendees were National Artist for Dance, Ms. Alice Reyes, along with leaders from various sectors, business associations, and top executives, all celebrating not just National Women’s Month, but the truth that every day is a day to honor women.
With events like this, we are reminded that the road to empowerment is paved by women supporting women, and together, we rise to create a more inclusive and successful future for all.
