In a hidden corner of Ilocos Norte, tucked within a serene and lush backyard, Good Vibes Café has become more than just a dining destination. It is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and the unyielding drive of two sisters who dared to dream beyond limitations. Maricor Rasella and CJoy Salvador’s journey in building this haven of tranquility and culinary artistry is a powerful narrative of turning challenges into opportunities.
The Birth of Good Vibes Café
Good Vibes Café was born out of a shared passion for creating meaningful experiences through food and a deep connection to nature. For CJoy Salvador, the youngest of eight siblings, the dream of opening a café was rooted in her high school years. However, the path to achieving this dream was far from straightforward. After spending eight years in the corporate world as an HR professional, CJoy found herself yearning for a space where she could channel her creativity and passion for culinary arts. The lack of formal culinary education didn’t deter her; instead, it inspired her to innovate.
Starting with what she had—a family garden—CJoy converted the space into a rustic cafĂ©. The initial setup was modest, featuring low tables called “dulang,” borrowed furniture, and a menu that was as experimental as it was heartfelt. Despite financial constraints, the sisters turned their family’s vegetable garden into a sanctuary for food and relaxation, embodying the very essence of “good vibes.”
Synergy Between Sisters
The partnership between Maricor and CJoy has been a cornerstone of Good Vibes Café’s success. While CJoy focuses on the creative and operational aspects, Maricor leverages her expertise as a government trade professional to provide mentorship and business insights. This dynamic collaboration underscores the importance of teamwork and shared vision in any entrepreneurial endeavor.
“We’re not just sisters; we’re partners,” Maricor says. “Our synergy comes from our shared goals and the mutual respect for what each of us brings to the table.”
Building on Local Roots
Good Vibes Café is more than a business; it is a celebration of local culture and sustainability. The menu is a blend of flexitarian and vegetarian dishes, showcasing heirloom recipes and local ingredients such as maluit and balatinaw rice. These rare varieties of black rice, grown on mountain slopes, add a unique touch to their offerings while supporting local farmers.
The café’s ambiance reflects the natural beauty of its surroundings. Set within a mini jungle-like garden, it invites guests to walk barefoot and breathe in the serenity. This commitment to authenticity and connection to the environment has made Good Vibes Café a beloved spot for locals and tourists alike.
Overcoming Challenges
The journey to establish Good Vibes Café was not without its hurdles. Financial constraints meant that every step required resourcefulness and determination. “When we started, we didn’t have money for fancy setups. We made do with what we had,” CJoy recalls. “We even emptied our house of furniture to create a welcoming space for our guests.”
Learning the technicalities of running a business was another challenge. CJoy’s participation in the “Kapatid Mentor Me” program proved instrumental in addressing gaps in her knowledge. The program provided training in accounting, costing, and pricing—skills that were crucial for turning her passion into a sustainable enterprise. “It’s not enough to have passion; you need to understand the numbers and processes behind a successful business,” she emphasizes.
The Essence of Good Vibes
Good Vibes Café is not just a place to eat; it is a sanctuary where people come to relax and rejuvenate. The sisters’ vision was to create a space that felt like a haven, especially for those seeking respite from the stresses of daily life. The café’s unique ambiance—a blend of rustic charm and natural beauty—has attracted a diverse clientele, from local professionals to tourists and expatriates.
The café also hosts a variety of events, including intimate gatherings, proposals, and wellness activities. “We want our guests to feel at home,” says Maricor. “Whether it’s a casual visit or a special occasion, we aim to provide an experience that leaves a lasting impression.”
