When planning a trip to Hong Kong, particularly for the Lunar New Year celebrations, finding the right place to stay is crucial. For those seeking a blend of history, luxury, and personalized service, The Murray, Hong Kong, a Niccolo Hotel, is a standout choice. Whether you’re a business traveler, a family seeking a cultural experience, or an expat looking for a refined getaway, The Murray promises an unforgettable stay.

Originally built in 1969 as a government office building, The Murray is a masterpiece of adaptive reuse. Preserved under Hong Kong’s “Conserving Central” initiative, it’s one of the city’s most iconic structures. Renowned architectural firm Foster + Partners spearheaded its transformation into a luxury hotel, combining the building’s historic significance with contemporary elegance. Today, its black, white, and gold marble interiors exude sophistication, while art pieces scattered throughout the property add a cultural touch.

Why is The Murray perfect for Lunar New Year? Let me count the ways:

Location, location, location Nestled in the heart of Central, The Murray offers easy access to Hong Kong’s major attractions. It’s steps away from lush parks—perfect for a morning stroll—and close to cultural landmarks like Tai Kwun and the Central Market. For Lunar New Year, you’ll be right in the middle of the festivities, with parades, lion dances, and markets within reach.

Panoramic rooftop views The rooftop restaurant and bar, Popinjays, provides sweeping views of the city’s skyline. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy Hong Kong’s dazzling New Year fireworks while indulging in European-inspired dishes and expertly crafted cocktails. The wraparound terrace makes for an unparalleled dining experience.

Festive culinary delights The Murray’s dining outlets, including The Tai Pan and Garden Lounge, offer special Lunar New Year menus. Guests can savor traditional Chinese dishes with a modern twist, from dim sum to indulgent desserts. The hotel’s breakfast, served at Murray Lane, is equally delectable, with a wide array of options to start your day right.

Cultural immersion The Murray embraces the festive spirit with its Chinese New Year Market, showcasing traditional treats, decorations, and crafts. It’s a wonderful way to experience local culture without leaving the property.

My stay experience

The Murray boasts 336 rooms and suites designed for ultimate comfort. During my stay, I was treated to a room with a view of the park across the hotel—a serene and refreshing sight amidst the city’s hustle and bustle. The room’s contemporary design, paired with thoughtful amenities, made it a haven I didn’t want to leave.

The staff at The Murray go above and beyond to ensure guests have a seamless stay. When I needed cash for a cab, a staff member accompanied me to an ATM. When that didn’t work, he used my credit card to get me cash. It’s these small but meaningful gestures that set The Murray apart.

As I was there for work, I indulged in a low-impact, full-body workout in the indoor heated pool. I enjoyed a quiet morning swim before my work day began.

As a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and a Forbes 5-star property, The Murray has earned its reputation for excellence. With around 400 staff dedicated to ensuring a flawless guest experience, it’s no wonder this hotel has become a flagship property for the Niccolo brand.

From its rich history to its impeccable service, The Murray, Hong Kong, is more than just a hotel—it’s a destination in itself. This Lunar New Year, or any other celebration, treat yourself to an urban oasis where every moment is curated to perfection.
