Japan remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, according to Ambassador Kazuya Endo. Speaking at a lecture organized by the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines and Stratbase ADR Institute, he highlighted the importance of enhancing interoperability with the Philippines to address regional security challenges.

Ambassador Endo emphasized the need for stronger international and regional cooperation, stating, “We must develop a framework that ensures long-term peace and encourages prosperity in the region.”

The lecture, titled “Reinforcing Japan-Philippines Strategic Cooperation to Maintain Peace and Stability in the Indo-Pacific,” was held on January 10, 2025, at the Manila Polo and Country Club in Makati City. It came against the backdrop of increasing tensions in the Indo-Pacific, driven by China’s growing aggression in the South China Sea and its continued militarization of disputed territories.

Japan and the Philippines recently signed a landmark defense agreement that allows Japanese Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) to join training and humanitarian missions in Philippine territory. This agreement, hailed as a significant step in deepening bilateral security ties, reflects the shared determination to strengthen a rules-based order and counter coercive activities in the region.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Shin Kawashima, a Professor at the University of Tokyo’s Department of International Relations, provided insights into the complexities of foreign policies and their role in upholding stability in the Indo-Pacific. Dr. Kawashima underscored the critical importance of fostering international alliances to navigate evolving geopolitical challenges.

A panel discussion followed, featuring RADM Rommel Jude Ong (Ret), Professor of Praxis at the Ateneo School of Government, and Dr. Chester Cabalza, Founding President of the International Development and Security Cooperation. The panel explored topics such as maritime security, diplomacy, and national security, offering comprehensive perspectives on emerging regional challenges.

The event brought together government and military officials, members of the diplomatic corps, academics, media, and civil society representatives, underscoring the shared vision of a free, open, and stable Indo-Pacific.
