What are the three challenges of sustainable agriculture?

In his message to the members of the European Chamber of Commerce at the recent 2024 Sustainable Agriculture Forum, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said:

“Although agriculture remains a pillar of our economy, it faces many challenges, including climate change, degradation of natural resources, and socio-economic pressures. These complicate the issue of food security in the country and around the world.”

So how does the Philippine government show its commitment to sustainable agriculture?

Tiu Laurel pointed to the Department of Agriculture’s four-year plan “For an Abundant New Philippines” which focuses on boosting agricultural production to provide affordable, safe, and nutritious food while promoting agriculture and fisheries as profitable industries.

The agriculture secretary listed down the following strategic measures: expanding agricultural areas, modernizing production systems, improving post-harvest infrastructure.

He said using advanced technologies and best practices should increase the productivity and resilience of farming communities.

“To achieve our goals, we must embrace making decisions based on science and information. This includes providing stakeholders with real-time data and modern tools to make informed decisions,” said Tiu Laurel.

“The road to sustainable agriculture is full of challenges, but by working with the private sector, NGOs, and international partners, we can overcome them,” he added.

Tiu Laurel also called on ECC members to help the government, particularly his department, to ensure that every Filipino has access to safe and healthy food, while also protecting the environment for future generations.

“Only with our collective efforts can we promote a sustainable future for agriculture,” he said.
