Data classification is a first step in preventing data breaches and protecting the Philippines’ digital assets, it was learned at the recent VITRO Nexus Forum on enhancing data management in the country’s public sector.

“Data classification is critical in managing the personal information of Filipinos,” said Atty. Aubin Nieva, Director of the National Privacy Commission (NPC), at the forum hosted by VITRO Inc., the data center arm of the PLDT Group, in collaboration with PLDT Enterprise.

“By categorizing data based on its sensitivities, we can ensure that the right measures are in place to protect it. This practice not only strengthens our resilience in the digital age but also safeguards the security and privacy of every Filipino,” Nieva added.

Among the best practices for data classification discussed in the forum entitled “Future-Ready Philippines: A Blueprint for Digital Resilience & Disaster Recovery” is classifying data as non-sensitive, sensitive, and highly sensitive data.

By prioritizing digital classification, national government agencies (NGAs) and local government units (LGUs) can adopt tailored strategies to manage and secure the data they handle. This enables the creation of a strong digital infrastructure that supports public service efficiency and broader digitalization efforts.

It lays the groundwork for secure digital systems. This process is essential for modernizing operations, enhancing public service delivery, ensuring disaster recovery, and safeguarding the nation’s digital assets. It is a first step to achieving secure and efficient digital transformation so that NGAs and LGUs can support a seamless and efficient public service delivery.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora illustrated the transformative impact of digitalization.

“Through digital initiatives, we’ve streamlined processes, enhanced accessibility, and ensured transparent governance. In San Juan, our commitment to technology is central to delivering better services to our citizens,” Zamora said.

The forum also stressed the vital role of digital infrastructure in the country’s transformation journey.

VITRO Inc., through its world-class data centers, provides the secure platforms necessary for public sector digital initiatives. Together with PLDT Enterprise, the PLDT Group continues to support the Philippine government’s digitalization goals by offering robust cloud and data center solutions.

Victor S. Genuino, President and CEO of ePLDT and VITRO Inc., reiterated, “We stand with the public sector in accelerating digital transformation for the benefit of the Filipino people. Our data center and cloud infrastructures are designed to support NGAs, LGUs, and the citizens they serve on this journey.”
