Maritime infrastructure development, such as smart shipping, coastal tourism, and renewable energy, holds significant potential to drive inclusive economic growth, improve the livelihoods of Filipinos, and promote a sustainable blue economy. This was discussed at a forum led by the Italian Chamber of Commerce Philippines Inc. (ICCPI) on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
Public-private partnerships and government projects can play a key role in developing these infrastructures.
During a reception at the World Trade Center in Manila, ICCPI Executive Director Lorens Ziller emphasized the importance of smart shipping—technology-driven, environmentally friendly shipping solutions. He noted that “smart shipping lessens the impact on the environment” and contributes to the growth of a blue economy which focuses on sustainable use of ocean resources for economic development while preserving marine ecosystems.
Recently, ICCPI also hosted the Subic-Clark Business Conference, highlighting business and investment opportunities in key areas.
Ziller pointed out that Clark’s “multi-modal transport” system—a network combining various forms of transportation, such as air, sea, and land—positions it as a gateway to becoming a global logistics hub. He also mentioned that the Subic-Clark-Batangas Railway system could be central to the future of transportation and logistics in the Philippines.
As Managing Director at Infrastructure & Construction Focus Group (ICFG), Ziller further suggested that developing ports and private marinas could greatly enhance the country’s maritime transport system.
Meanwhile, SSD GPS Philippines Managing Partner Gary Zaldy Galvez shared that their company’s products can support blue economy initiatives by providing customized technology solutions, such as fleet management systems with GPS tracking.
These products, imported primarily from Europe and Singapore, help businesses efficiently manage their fleets across the country.
Galvez emphasized the flexibility of SSD’s services, stating that “we can design, innovate, and manufacture devices tailored to specific needs.” He highlighted the company’s ability to deliver solutions quickly, often within just 15 days.
In recent developments, the Philippine Senate passed the Blue Economy Act, which focuses on the sustainable use of ocean resources to drive economic growth, create jobs, and maintain the health of marine ecosystems.
