Malaysia will chair the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit next year followed by the Philippines in 2026, it was learned at the country’s 67th National Day reception on September 4 in Shangri-La, Makati City.

In his remarks, the Ambassador of Malaysia to the Philippines, Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino, said this will provide an opportunity for the ASEAN member states to build a community with “greater solidarity” together.

“As we celebrate the 67th national day, we reflect on the progress we have achieved together as a nation. From a predominantly great economy, Malaysia has transformed into one of the most dynamic and diverse economies in the region,” he said.

Ambassador Castelino highlighted the cooperation and collaboration between Malaysia and the Philippines in the areas of the following: trade and investment, tourism, Islamic banking, arts and culture, and peace and security.

With the ongoing efforts and collaboration with the Philippine government, private sector, and other stakeholders, the Malaysian ambassador emphasized the successful development of Islamic finance (Maybank) and the halal ecosystem, particularly in Mindanao.

He also noted the strong synergy of Malaysia-Philippine relations in SMEs, renewables, and halal tourism, citing the upcoming Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) on September 17 to 20, 2024 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

As Malaysia and the Philippines celebrate 60 years of friendship, the bilateral ties have strengthened – filled with several high-level engagements such as Malaysian Foreign Minister, H.E. Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Haji Hasan’s visit in July, and activities focusing on education, culture, and arts.

“Malaysia has always been a multicultural nation, a place where different languages, cultures, and faiths could exist in harmony. This rich tapestry is not only a part of heritage but also of greater strength,” he added.

In addition, he encourages Malaysians and Filipinos to continue having a shared vision of a beautiful tomorrow.

“Let us continue to uphold the values of progress, unity, resilience, and a forward-looking spirit as we strive to fulfill the aspirations of a beloved nation – both here in the Philippines and back home,” Ambassador Castelino said.
