The Philippines is the only Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) country that has not committed to a net-zero target, it was learned at the Energy Smart Forum 2024 of the European Chamber of Commerce Philippines (ECCP) last August.
The net-zero target is the international scientific consensus to reduce by 45 percent global net human-caused emissions of carbon dioxide from 2010 levels by 2030, reaching net zero around 2050. This is to prevent worst climate change damages.
At the forum with the theme, “Powering Progress: Accelerating Towards a Sustainable Energy Future”, Energy Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella explained that this is because of the costs it will take. He also said other key players will have to be considered in this initiative.
Speaking to THEPHILBIZNEWS, Net Zero Campaign Manager Dawn Cabigon said lack of resources is one of the challenges of the Net Zero campaign in the Philippines, citing the example of one company that had to stop its own efforts.
Cabigon said most small and medium-sized enterprises are not aware of the net-zero concept, which is to cut carbon emissions to levels that nature and other measures can absorb them, leaving zero in the atmosphere.
She said ECCP’s goal is to empower these enterprises to help them develop their policies, strategies, and approaches that could also create job opportunities under the net-zero campaign.
Joining the United Nations’ initiative to halve global emissions by 2030 is part of ECCP’s commitment to a zero-carbon and sustainable future.
Promoting sustainable initiatives, ECCP organizes events and campaigns focusing on renewable energy and efficiency, waste management, forest protection, sustainable infrastructure, and strong climate policies.
Shaping a sustainable and zero-carbon future
Given that the Philippines is highly vulnerable to the detrimental impact of climate change, ECCP is launching two exclusive Race to Zero campaigns this month. It is inviting non-state actors—various stakeholders, key leaders, and innovators—for the following Philippines events.
1) Webinar | Understanding the Urgency of Net Zero
9 September 2024, 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM | Zoom
A free webinar for business owners and leaders to learn about the critical importance of achieving net zero. The session will cover climate challenges like natural disasters and their impact on business investments. A Race to Zero representative will discuss the private sector’s role in global climate solutions, especially ahead of COP29 in Azerbaijan.
2) 1st Race to Zero Philippines Summit: Accelerating the Philippines’ Path to Net Zero
10 October 2024, 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM | Ascott, BGC
The morning session explores the urgency of a zero-carbon future, aligning local and global efforts, and advancing UN 2030 Breakthrough Agendas on Power, Transport, Nature, Urban Development, Cities, and Oceans. The afternoon session will discuss SMEs’ pivotal role in emissions reduction, regulatory demands, and the benefits of embracing net zero practices.
Registration Fees:
P5,000 for ECCP Members
P6,000 for Non-ECCP Members
Complimentary pass for the Race to Zero Philippine Advocates
