Deputy Ambassador Alistair White noted that the trade between the UK and the Philippines has reached a record high, standing at GBP 2.9 billion as of August 2. UK meat exports play a crucial role in this trade, being the fourth most exported commodity to the Philippines. The Philippines ranks as the UK's third-largest pork export market, following the European Union and China.

In a significant development for the UK-Philippines trade relationship, the United Kingdom has submitted an application for poultry regionalization within the Philippines, a move that could bolster the already flourishing meat trade between the two countries.

This announcement was made by Deputy Ambassador Alistair White at the UK Meat Exports forum, held on the eve of the World Food Expo in Manila last July 30.

The event, organized in collaboration with the UK Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB) and the British Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, highlighted the ongoing trends, challenges, and opportunities in the UK meat export sector. It also underscored the strong support from the British Embassy in Manila for enhancing bilateral trade and economic ties.

Deputy Ambassador White noted that the trade between the UK and the Philippines has reached a record high, standing at GBP 2.9 billion as of August 2. UK meat exports play a crucial role in this trade, being the fourth most exported commodity to the Philippines. The Philippines ranks as the UK’s third-largest pork export market, following the European Union and China.

“Beyond supporting UK industries, your meat exports also ensure that the Philippines has an ample food supply to meet the demand of the Philippine population,” White said, thanking exporters, importers, and trade promoters for their efforts in making the market successful.

The UK’s application for poultry regionalization in the Philippines reflects a commitment to deepening the bilateral relationship around meat exports. The collaboration between the UK’s Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs and the Philippines’ Department for Agriculture aims to showcase the UK’s robust preventive measures and strict controls for consideration by Philippine authorities.

Despite recent challenges, including a temporary ban on UK exports to the Philippines due to a single case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) detected in Scotland, the UK has demonstrated a proactive approach. The country swiftly informed Philippine authorities about its efforts to contain the case and protect the supply chain.

“The Philippines should be reassured that the UK takes all measures with full transparency to address such issues and ensure the continuous supply of exports,” White said.

The British Embassy remains committed to supporting this vital trade partnership and sharing best practices to maintain confidence and trust between the UK and Philippine agricultural trade authorities.

As the World Food Expo (WOFEX) opens, the UK aims to showcase its agricultural products and strengthen its position in the Philippine market. Visitors to the expo are encouraged to visit the AHDB stand to explore the diverse range of UK meat products available.

This development marks another milestone in the growing trade relationship between the UK and the Philippines, promising new opportunities for collaboration and economic growth.
