The EU has released €1.2 million (over 76 million Philippine pesos) in humanitarian aid to respond to the floods that have affected the country in the past month. The funding will help address the most pressing needs of people in Mindanao, the island hit the hardest.
EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, said: “The beginning of this year’s monsoon and typhoon season is proving very hard for people in the Philippines, and the EU is stepping up its assistance to the most affected populations. This funding will help provide much needed relief to people in Mindanao.”
This allocation will be used to provide emergency relief to the most vulnerable families in heavily affected areas, focusing in particular on food assistance, access to safe water and sanitation facilities, and other essential services.
This new funding comes in addition to the €3.1 million already allocated in humanitarian assistance to the Philippines earlier this year, to respond to the protracted crisis in Mindanao, and to the floods which affected other parts of the island in February.
