The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Chungnam National University (CNU) to develop joint activities that will boost intellectual property (IP) education and research both in the Philippines and the Republic of Korea (ROK).

IPOPHL and the CNU signed the MOU earlier this month, marking the agency’s first ever partnership with an international academic institution.

“IPOPHL looks forward to the impact we will produce together with CNU under this MOU. I am also confident this collaboration will help us to build a stronger relationship between our two nations as our people reach for a better, brighter future that is ‘rising, shining, beckoning’ on the horizon,” IPOPHL Director General Rowel S. Barba said.

Under the MOU, IPOPHL will provide support in providing Filipino students and faculty to participate in CNU’s IP education programs while also working to bring more CNU students and faculty to join IPOPHL’s IP educational programs.

The CNU will likewise provide necessary support for Filipino students while promoting IPOPHL’s education and professional activities to its academic community.

Both parties will collaborate in the planning and hosting of joint IP educational events and camps while sharing expertise and resources for the successful organization of joint conferences and symposia.

Aside from inking a partnership, IPOPHL staff, along with representatives from the De La Salle University, also joined the CNU IP Symposium to learn more about the IP landscape in ROK.

IPOPHL also met with the CNU College of Law to explore possible joint activities to bring more law students to the IP profession.

IPOPHL and CNU will be working on a biennial plan that will lay out specific activities and initiatives to be delivered to ensure the best possible outcome under the new partnership.

“With the establishment of a broad and flexible framework, we will develop cooperation activities that will strengthen and promote IP education and research collaboration between IPOPHL and Chungnam,” Barba added.

CNU is one of the top universities in Daejeon, South Korea. It is part of the top universities ranked in the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings, placing in the 851-900 bracket.
