Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) takes a major step in the development of its offshore wind power projects in the Philippines by deploying vertical and state-of-the-art scanning LIDARs in its proposed projects sites in Camarines Sur with additional units to follow shortly in Samar Norte and Pangasinan. Light Detection and Ranging devices or LIDARs are wind measurement instruments that use laser technology to measure wind speeds.
CIP celebrated the launching of the LIDARs for its 1GW San Miguel Bay Offshore Wind Power Project in Camarines Sur with provincial and municipal LGU executives, together with representatives from national and regional agencies including the DOE, DENR, DTI and DILG.
“CIP is very grateful for the incredible support it has received from the local government of Camarines Sur and from the various national and regional agencies,” according to CIP’s offshore wind Co-CEO for the Philippines, Rune Damgaard. He further adds, “CIP is a global leader in developing offshore wind projects. Installing the LIDARs, which are non-intrusive wind measurement devices, is a project milestone, as we are concurrently ramping up our other activities to progress the development of our projects in a manner that safeguards the environment and the community.”
The LIDAR launching ceremony was held in the Digital Transformation Center within the grounds of the Camarines Sur Capitol Complex last May 30. “The project’s unwavering commitment to sustainability aligns seamlessly with our provincial aspirations, paving the way for an era of economic prosperity and an enhanced quality of life for the people of Camarines Sur. We are honored to be a part of this transformative journey and pledge our unwavering support to His Excellency Ambassador Franz-Michael Skjold Mellbin and CIP Co-CEO Rune Damgaard in their mission to harness the immense potential of offshore wind energy, ultimately propelling Camarines Sur to even greater heights of progress and innovation,” said Governor Luigi Villafuerte.
The Danish ambassador to the Philippines, Ambassador Franz-Michael Skjold Mellbin, also graced the event and added, “Today is a milestone in the Philippines’ green energy transformation that promises affordable, abundant and reliable electricity to all Filipinos. Working closely together with CIP, the Philippine government and the local government of Camarines Sur have taken a key step towards the largest offshore wind farm in the Philippines, bringing jobs to the people of Camarines Sur and power to fuel continued economic growth in the country.”
CIP, through its local subsidiary, CI NMF (PH) Corp. is the first 100% foreign-owned entity that was awarded with wind energy service contracts by the DOE to develop offshore wind power projects with a combined capacity of up to 2,000MW. The Board of Investment also awarded CIP’s projects with the Green Lane Certificates of Endorsement to help ensure smooth processing of permits.
Francis Daba, CIP’s Business Development Director for the Philippines, remarked, “Today is another significant milestone for CIP in the country. We remain committed to contribute to the country’s goal for a low-carbon future and improved energy security by harnessing the significant potential of offshore wind.”
