From famous bubble tea shops to scrumptious beef noodle soups, the country of Taiwan has been known to many locals and tourists alike, which takes pride in its fascinating temples, natural landscapes, and diverse culture.

On October 10, 2023, the Republic of China (Taiwan) celebrated its 112th National Day, marking a historic event that shaped the nation’s destiny. To honor this momentous occasion, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines hosted a grand National Day Reception last October 9 (Monday) at Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Pasay City, Metro Manila.

The event drew a great set of attendees including government officials, diplomatic representatives, and members of the media.

During his speech, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Representative Wallace M.G. Chow shared that the bilateral trade between Taiwan and the Philippines in 2022 reached $10.72 billion, wherein the country was also considered the 21st largest economy by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Further, Chow mentioned that Taiwan expects 320,000 Filipino tourists in 2023.

Chow also said that Taiwan strives to strengthen its relations with the Philippines through the New Southbound Policy — highlighting multifaceted cooperation, partnership, and people-to-people engagement.

Featuring cultural exchange and artistic appreciation, the event showcased various Chinese foods and delicacies (and free milk tea, yes!) as well as spectacular performances. A highlight of the evening was Diabolo Dance Theatre’s “Light of Life” show. With contemporary performing arts elements — from music, dance, and circus acts, to lighting effects displaying visual artistry and entertainment, the captivating performance amused the distinguished guests.

Founded in 1986, this troupe has gained international recognition for its innovative approach to ancient folk acrobatics. Having performed in more than 30 countries and boasting over 3,000 shows, the Diabolo Dance Theatre showcases Taiwan’s artistic prowess on a global scale. Indeed, it serves as a great comeback after their 3-year hiatus due to the pandemic, isn’t it?

Prepare to be in awe as the show depicts an acrobatic spectacle of dancers’ unique mastery of diabolo (Chinese yo-yo) harmonizing their performance with sound and vision, unveiling a world brimming with imagination. As their performance progresses, clouds gather, winds rise, and waves stir…leading the vibrant dance to the audience and blending the physical and virtual realms within the vicinity. So join this enchanting world of mysticism, creativity, and surprises — and be part of this memorable experience.

Furthermore, the National Day Reception in Manila not only celebrated Taiwan’s rich history but also provided a platform for cultural exchange and artistic appreciation – demonstrating the strong ties between Taiwan and the Philippines over the years. The “Light of Life” show, likewise, etched an unforgettable impression in the hearts of us attendees, serving as a powerful emblem of the country’s enduring spirit, encompassing remarkable artistry, cultural richness, and overarching economic vitality.

Indeed, the Republic of China (Taiwan) is more than just its famous skyscrapers, bustling night markets, and sky lanterns — it is considered a home (not so) far away from home by many Taiwanese and Filipinos across the world. Happy 112th Birthday to you!
