“Rumor has it…” is an ongoing exhibit of Alex Aguilar’s work at the Underground Art Gallery, Makati Cinema Square.
In this — his fourth solo show which opened last April 12 and will run until May 3 — Aguilar bares an “intertwining of the work with the self.”
In notes sent by the artist’s publicist to ThePhilBizNews, Aguilar’s works are described as having the propensity for autobiography and putting himself in the work, but not literally.
“Rumour Has It … started out as a contemplation of habit, habit infused by superstition as the muscle memory he relied/relies on to move through his various lives and lifetimes, but it veered, as it would, maybe even as it should, into something less observational, less passive,” read one of the exhibition notes written by Dodo Dayao.
Still, this show could well be the artist’s most autobiographical show.
Dayao explained: “There may be no literal self-portraits here… but one can argue that’s what all the pieces are, self-portraits at various junctures, self-portraits of various selves, striking conversations, conducting interrogations, making negotiations.”
The press notes also highlighted Aguilar’s hyper-vibrant surrealism, which was cited in his work as “always actively engaged in a push and pull with itself.”
“If Aguilar is after anything here, it’s achieving a convergence, a bleeding of timelines, a truce of demons,” it said.
