The Center for Empowerment, Innovation and Training on Renewable Energy (CentRE) and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Philippines, together with partners, held the 2021 Renewable Energy (RE) Congress Deep Dive Sessions last September 17-18. The events discussed the renewable energy systems, innovations, and practical applications in the Philippines.

Linked with the 2021 RE Congress on September 25, the deep dive sessions presented practices or cases that may affect the realization of 35% target RE on the adaption of the energy mix by 2030.

They dealt with processes, along with the inherent challenges and learnings in implementing renewable energy from different settings and conditions. The sessions focused on three specific areas: Distributed Energy Resources, Practical Application of Renewable Energy for Communities, and RE Innovations for Off-Grid and Energy-Poor Areas.

The Session on Distributed Energy Resources, hosted by WeGen Distributed Energy Phils, focused on the technology needed to accelerate Distributed Energy Resources (DER) deployment and how to attract DER financing from the financial market. It also presented the enabling policies from the lens of renewable energy developers and customers.

The second session, on the Practical Application of Renewable Energy for Communities, co-presented by the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities, One Renewable Energy Ent., Inc., and the Foundation for Sustainable Society, Inc., delved into the RE applications in community enterprises and social services. It showed how these technologies can be used in economic and health emergencies.

In the last session, on RE Innovations for Off-Grid and Energy-Poor Areas, co-organizers Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology (CREST) and the Center for Power Issues and Initiatives (CPII), answered  the question how RE can become accessible to marginalized groups, as well as those in off-grid and energy-poor areas in the country.

Mr. Charlie Ayco, Wegen Laudato Si, Inc. president and also concurrent president of The CentRE expressed hope that the conversations undertaken during the Deep Dive Sessions will result in positive outcomes for the Philippines’ energy future.

“Let us continue the dialogues and may this help strengthen our actions in carving a better and sustainable future for our children and the future generation.”

The Deep Dive Sessions serve as the lead-off event to the 2021 RE Congress. Already in its fourth year, the mission of this annual event is to identify actions and programs to meet the renewable energy targets of the Philippines, as well as highlight the importance of renewable energy in spurring inclusive and sustainable economic recovery and addressing the effects of climate change.

This year’s 2021 RE Congress will be held on September 25 from 9 am to 12 noon. It will be presented as an online event.
